BREAKING NEWS: Is Mark Dayton Really Sober?
by Crystal Kelley, Friendly Neighborhood Republican I was doing research for this series of articles when I stumbled upon something, a word actually, that made me change direction from asking the question, "Is Mark Dayton stable," to:
Is Mark Dayton sober?
Dayton is a self-identified alcoholic who has been through treatment twice, most recently about three years ago for one full week after relapsing near the end of his senate career. Records show Dayton has only been sober for about three years. Or has he?
I ran across an article from the StarTribune, published July 4, 2010, which lead me down a path that questions Mark Dayton’s sobriety. The article was titled, "Mark Dayton: a topsy-turvey ride." In the second paragraph, something caught my eye. It said, "Sipping from a bottle of kombucha, a fermented tea that has become a campaign trail staple, this former U.S. senator is trying to revive an up-and-down political career at age 63."
Fermented tea? Doesn't "fermented" usually mean something has turned to alcohol? There began my research on kombucha, the official drink of the Dayton campaign.
What I found was a treasure trove of reasons why an alcoholic shouldn't be downing kombucha tea, and if he is, he is no longer sober according to the sobriety requirements of Alcoholics Anonymous. Here's an article on Relapse Prevention, which may apply to this situation, because kombucha tea is well known for its varying alcohol content.
A website called, "Organic-Kombucha.com. contains this heading: "Who should avoid drinking kombucha tea?" The a sub-head reads: "We strongly suggest not to use kombucha under the following circumstances:"
Alcoholics in recovery - Many recovering alcoholics have found it helpful to drink Kombucha during their recovery period. It is said to remove the desire for alcohol. But be warned though, Kombucha does contain a small quantity of alcohol, normally less that 1% by volume. Any recovering alcoholic knows that even a small quantity of alcohol can have a negative effect on them, so be careful.
Kombucha, in fact, may contain much more alcohol than mentioned above. On June 28, 2010, the New York Times reported Whole Foods pulled the product from their shelves because, "the alcohol content might be high enough to attract the attention of the federal government."
Well, they were right.
Two days later, the Treasury Department issued a warning stating kombucha may be subject to the same taxes and regulations as other beverages containing alcohol. The agency said it “is coordinating with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ensure kombucha products currently on the market comply with Federal laws..."
Analysts said kombucha tea sold under brand names like Synergy can ferment after shipment, raising the alcohol content from a legal 0.5 percent or less to as high as 3 percent, similar to some beers.
Kombucha tea seems to be well known for its "buzz." In fact a lot of people flipped out when their kombucha was taken away. The way people talk about it, it’s as if they need it, not want it. There’s even a facebook site devoted to the lamentations of kombucha users deprived of their favorite drink: “Dude, Where’s my Kombucha?” You can track “bucha” sightings around the country, including a supply in Vista, CA, to be sold only to those over 21.
GT Dave, owner of Synergy Drinks, announced a recall after reports of elevated alcohol levels in Kombucha products. More publicly, Linsday Lohan blamed Kombucha for setting off her SCRAM bracelet due to its alcohol content. GT Dave believes the elevated levels may be occurring after the product has been bottled and left their facility.
If that is the case, the bottles would need new labels marking the alcohol content. Kombucha is said to increase metabolism, reduce cholesterol, and even fight the effects of ageing. Oddly enough, Kombucha has been said to cure alcoholism. This seems rather bizarre being that Kombucha contains alcohol.
One could argue, “Well, Dayton might not know it contains alcohol. So it’s not his fault.” I argue that it doesn’t matter. I once knew a recovering alcoholic who was given a glass of spiked punch at a party, which led almost immediately to heavy drinking and the destruction of his family. It doesn’t matter why an alcoholic drinks, it just matters that an alcoholic in recovery should not drink at all.
We don't know how many of these drinks he has per day. Is kombucha the reason Dayton often appears befuddled? Is it the reason he seems to slur his words at times?
There is a saying made famous by the movie, "28 Days," starring Sandra Bullock. It addresses when an addict should try to have a serious relationship. It is, in a nutshell, after an addict has become sober he should buy a potted plant. If after one year the plant is still alive, he should buy a pet. If after the second year the pet is alive, then in the third year the addict may begin to consider having a serious relationship with another person.
We don’t know exactly where Dayton falls on that sobriety spectrum. But either way it’s too soon for him to be entering into the very important relationship of governor of an entire state with responsibility for roughly five million souls. I just think it's unwise.

Meg, Use The Force.
Methinks the lady may be listening to her ‘political advisers’ and not the little voice within… the same skills she used in building eBay to the internet star that it is.
Californians understood and agreed when she told us how important small business and creative start-ups are to the growth of the state and the nation, and how runaway taxation and regulation is forcing businesses away from California. We agreed when she said that the state had to be brought to fiscal sanity.
Then, about a week ago, we started to see ads in which Meg appears to be saying that the state can’t be run like a business. C’mon, Meg! What the heck…?! You’d better fire those clowns and go with your gut feelings, your instincts… use the ‘force’, Meg.
This state’s economy went south starting with that prodigy of leftist goofball politics, Jerry Brown. Grey Davis then came to haunt us, and finally Arnold SchwartzenKennedy-Shriver to deliver the coup de grace to an already crippled state economy.
BB (before Brown) California was the largest business in the world, with a state government that was in partnership with business in world trade and a business model that was the envy of the world.
Under successive far left liberal governments in Sacramento we’ve experienced wave after wave of business and personal taxation, under the thin guise of fees paid to state and municipal governments. Fees, that were they examined in the light of the Constitution, would be found to be illegal. Much of what has transpired in our state houses and in our Federal government has had little enough to do with regard to the Constitution.
This state is a business… it’s a failing business… a badly failing business, and what’s needed is what would be asked of any executive coming in and being asked to rescue a distressed firm. Analyze strengths and weaknesses, cut unnecessary expenses, cut back on non-critical personnel, re-negotiate new labor contracts and re-establish the brand of the company… in our case, that’s the state.
You have to prove to the nation and the world that California once again fosters business and welcomes investment with business-friendly environments.
Meg, stick to fundamentals and forget the phony side-show guys.

What Comes Next?
It is pretty obvious by now that the Republicans will regain the House, effectively firing Nancy Pelosi. That alone is a huge step in returning some sanity to the legislative process. Control of the Senate is a long shot, but even if the Republicans fall short, there is a good chance Harry Reid may take a long overdue retirement.
The important thing to remember is that change alone will not guarantee desired outcomes--look what our current President, elected with a mandate to “change”, has wrought. Hopefully, we are sending a new crop of legislators to Congress to accomplish two main goals. 1. Undo some of the extreme changes enacted by Pelosi and Reid and signed by Obama. 2. Govern intelligently and with the consent and support of the great American people.
This will only happen if we, the people hold our representatives and senators accountable for their actions. To paraphrase another conservative blogger found in these pages, “Be forever vigilant and remain true to our core beliefs.”

Consider this a warning concerning H. R. 5741 introduced in the US House of Representatives by Congressman Charlie Rangel, a democrat, of New York. The title of the bill is: Universal National Service Act.
According to the bill itself, its purpose is to: “To require all persons in the United States between the ages of 18 and 42 to perform national service, either as a member of the uniformed services or in civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, to authorize the induction of persons in the uniformed services during wartime to meet end-strength requirements of the uniformed services, and for other purposes.”
It is, in fact, A NEW Draft Bill. But it is much more.

Months ago, when I first became aware of it, Obama called it a "civilian national security force.” He is reported to have said that this “force” would be as powerful, strong and well funded as the half-trillion dollar Army, Marines, Navy, and Air Force.
Here’s a quote from Obama’s speech in Colorado Springs back on July 2nd, 2008: The US "cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set." Obama went on to say: "We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."
This is a truly frightening bill. Under the Obama Regime, America has been transformed into a socialist state -- and now -- it would appear, we are set on a course that would transform America into a "POLICE STATE."
None of what Obama has proposed with his civilian national security force is new. Oh, no! We’ve seen it all before… prior to the Second World War. Now, however, with HR 5741 it could become a truly frightening reality.
This ought to scare America to death! The very fact that Obama would even propose such a thing ought to send Americans running into the streets to decry this attempt to bring back those horrible nightmares of Germany in the 1930’s and 1940’s.
We warned of the reformulation of militias within the US if Obama was elected. Well, the militia units are back, just as we predicted. They will be denounced and called “kooks” and “rednecks” by the socialist media in the US. But, for a moment, consider… if the media denounces them… oughten we to look into them for ourselves?
The Mainstream Media has proven time and again they will support the leftists in the country, yea, the world, while making every effort to destroy those who stand for freedom and liberty. Could it be those guys running around in the forest, in their camouflage suits, know something we don’t? Hey, I’m just asking!
We warned of the socialist background of Obama from, virtually, day one of his campaign. We warned that the mainstream media is so “in the tank” for Obama that they would not, and will not, report objectively on the man, nor his plans, such as the plan denounced above.
This HR 5741, the Universal National Service Act, is very serious, and very scary stuff, dear reader. You need to look into this and decide for yourself if America is ready to toss the constitution and our free capitalist society and bare our necks to the chains and the yoke of socialist slavery. For that is exactly where we are headed if we don’t call a halt to this insanity of accepting socialism gradually, incrementally, a little at a time.
Americans have a short time left to get to the truth. Will we? Not unless we, as individuals, dig it out for ourselves. We have the greatest library known to man at our fingertips… the Internet. Use it. We need to dig… and then dig some more… until we get the answers.
Our constitution and our country are too precious to lose through our own ignorance.
HR 5751, the Universal National Service Act, is an attack upon the freedom of all Americans. You NEED to read this bill for yourself. I seriously doubt you will hear much about it in the media. Read the bill, a fairly short read, and consider all the loopholes in it that would allow for all sorts of mischief by a Chief Executive of the US not particularly in love with the US Constitution. It will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up!
Please read this bill (SOURCE) and then contact your Senator, forthwith. It must be stopped if America is to survive as a free nation.
