Top Republican Candidates for 2012: Herman Cain

This is part of a series I'll be conducting on the 2012 Top Republican Candidates with the first candidate I will be analyzing is Herman Cain.

Herman Cain is the candidate who has the least not going for him (if that makes sense). For example, as I said in my Mitt Romney post, Romneycare was the barrier from winning the primary. Rick Perry has the vaccine scandals. He has the least amount of baggage compared to the other leading candidates.

As Herman Cain is new to the political circuit, a lack of experience can go both ways. As I said, he has less baggage than a career politician. However, this makes him an inexperienced candidate. People complained about Obama only serving a few years in Congress before running for President. Cain has NO years in Congress. This could play against him on the main battlefield.

His business career can also have an effect on the polls. Some people still feel hurt form the Bush years and are afraid to take a business method of running the government back to Washington. Others feel an Obama without the stark liberal contrasts could benefit the black community with his "roots" and business experience. Both instances (and many others) could bring some to the polls that haven't had interest before.

His "999" plan might be a deterrent as well. Places like Vista, CA (where I'm from) already have upwards of a 10% state sales tax. Adding on a 9% federal tax would make the sales tax rates (for all intents and purposes) about 20%. This is something many people don't consider when supporting Cain. Despite these problems, he brings new (business) strategies to the playing field that might benefit both Wall and Main street. Will they land him on Pennsylvania Avenue? Only time will tell.

Thanks for reading. Check out my blog, subscribe to my RSS feed, twitter, or by email. Please leave your thoughts on Herman Cain in the comments. Next up is Rick Perry.
