The Best Stories of 2011 - or, How The Liberals Ignored President Obama's Advice

Jan. 12, 2011 - President Obama said that the polarized national debate should be conducted "in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds." He also said that Americans should "help usher in more civility in our public discourse."Most conservatives agreed, but many liberals didn't... apparently...

Jan. 19, 2011 - Only a week after the president delivered his remarks, and only 11 days after the Gabby Giffords shooting near Tucson, AZ (Jan. 8), Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) – no relation, by the way - invoked the Holocaust to attack Republicans on health care and compared rhetoric on the issue to the work of infamous Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels, the guy who headed the book burning effort for Hitler. “They say it's a government takeover of health care, a big lie just like Goebbels," Cohen said. "You say it enough, you repeat the lie, you repeat the lie, and eventually, people believe it…” And Congressman Cohen didn’t stop there. “The Germans said enough about the Jews and people believed it–believed it and you have the Holocaust…" Cohen said. Why must liberals use such nasty hyperbole, so often?

Mar. 28, 2011 - Orlando Sentinel reporter Scott Powers said Vice President Joe Biden's staff kept him confined in a closet during a Democrat Party fundraiser in order to keep him from mingling with guests. Kathy Kattenburg posted this in Breaking News Media Politics: "I deeply wish that I could say this story is ‘unbelievable,’ but it’s becoming all too clear that even the most bizarre examples of assaults on press freedom are possible in Obama’s White House." Biden spokeswoman Elizabeth Alexander apologized to Powers by writing, "Scott – You have our sincere apologies for the lack of a better hold room today.” As Kattenburg said, “Lack of a better hold room” is an interesting way of putting it. Didn’t Mr. Obama promise the most transparent administration in history? Oh, well, I guess. What would the media have said if Dick Cheney’s staff held a reporter in a closet? They would’ve called him a Nazi, among other things, I’m sure. This time, though, nary a whimper, this story is dead to them because a Democrat was at fault...

Mar. 29, 2011 - Senator Charles Schumer, on a conference call, told his fellow democrats to call the meager GOP spending cuts “extreme.” Reporters were listening in on the call, but Schumer didn’t know it right away. Reportedly, he stopped in mid-sentence. “The main thrust is basically that we want to negotiate and we want to come up with a compromise but the Tea Party is pulling Boehner too far over to the right and so far over that there is no more fruitful negotiations,” Schumer said on the call. “The only way we can avoid a shutdown is for Boehner to come up with a reasonable compromise and not just listen to what the Tea Party wants... I always use extreme,” Schumer said. “That is what the caucus instructed me to use.” Hmmm.

Mar. 31, 2011 - Congressman Jim McDermott (D-WA) said: “I'm tired of reading the Constitution and all the silly things we’ve done for the last 13 weeks." The reading McDermott spoke of began during the new Congress (after the 2010 elections) and Rep. Giffords (D-AZ) participated in it prior to being shot. The Democrats just wouldn’t listen to their leader, President Obama, and he didn’t follow his own advice, either. It figures, for the most part, they’re an angry, bitter lot.

In 2011, all of my favorite stories occurred in the first quarter of the year, and three in the span of four days. Next week I’ll serve up my favorite quotes for 2011. I hope you tune in, they’re amusing, for sure!
