WASHINGTON (AFP) — US President Barack Obama confidently predicted he would overcome tough odds and win his 2012 reelection fight Tuesday, selling the premise of his campaign to influential donors.
“Here is my message to you. You guys stick with this. If you don’t falter, if you stay steady we are going to win this thing,” Obama told Democratic fundraisers in Washington as his bid for a second White House term heats up.
“We are going to win this thing and America is going to win as a consequence,” Obama said in a short speech at a Washington hotel.
After failing to restore America to full prosperity after the worst economic crisis in decades, Obama is vulnerable to his own low approval ratings and Republican criticism of his economic record and high unemployment.
“We are going to have to fight for it. It is not a slam dunk,” Obama said, saying his historic 2008 election win came with the United States at a crossroads.
“We haven’t fully crossed the road and in some ways 2012 is even more important than it was four years ago.”
