In a recent interview on Fox News, Juan Williams referred to Michelle Malkin’s site as “just a blog” when comparing it to reporting done by a credentialed journalist. I believe the story they were discussing had to do with security leaks. But the story matters not for this post.
I certainly think Juan misspoke when downplaying Michelle’s opinion as “just a blogger”. Michelle comes with the same credentials as he and many of his media peers. She’s actually worked as a reporter and has authored several New York Times bestselling books.
Juan knows that. In fact, I understand the two of them are friendly. He surely apologized to Michelle for his “slip of the tongue” not long after the segment aired.
All water under the bridge? Maybe with Michelle, but I still have an issue with his comment. In fact, I find it offensive.
Remember, it wasn’t that long ago when a blogger broke the Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinski story. And, Andrew Brietbart’s brand of citizen’s journalism lives on today. But, I don’t think those sites are the basis for Juan’s comment either.
While Juan thinks of Breitbart, Drudge, and Malkin (and a small group of others) as exceptions, in his mind most blogs contain opinion not to be taken seriously. - - Read More
