Mitt Romney, talking to a private fundraising group, had a few blunt things to say about government dependency. He mentioned that almost half of Americans "pay no income tax" and are "dependent upon government." Much to the delight of the news media and the Obama campaign, he also said that those voters are likely to support Obama. (New York Times)
Jumping on the story, the media now accuse Romney of being insensitive - the greatest sin of leftist dogma:
Jim Messina, Mr. Obama’s campaign manager, said in a statement Monday evening that it was “shocking” that Mr. Romney would “go behind closed doors” to describe nearly half of the country in such terms.Yes, I'm shocked as well. I'm shocked that Romney is telling the truth and that the mainstream media and the Obama campaign are trying to somehow spin that as a bad thing. Sure, Romney could have said what he did in a nicer way, but it's hard to ignore the fact that 46.4% of American households paid no income tax in 2011. (Tax Policy Center)
Of course, the New York Times article reporting the story goes out of its way to try to explain that payroll taxes may or may not be included and that the 46.4% also represents elderly people and people who are too ppor to pay income tax.
All of which is beside the point. The fact remains that the tax burden in the country is only paid by half of its citizens. This is the result of the Bush tax cuts, which we should remember, were changed and renewed by the Nancy Pelosi Congress in 2010.
The fact remains that Romney's assumptions are absolutely correct. Those who receive government benefits are unlikely to vote for someone who promises to change the status quo.
Yet, somehow I see Romney's statement as a badge of courage, owning up to one of the major obstacles getting in the way of real changes to federal spending and taxes: the American people who keep voting to keep corrupt government in power.
That's what makes Obama such a scary president. Too many Americans actually believe the statist and socialist doctrine that he's preaching.
