I just heard about this little gem and I was horrified. Let me give you the details, and I will comment afterward in a calm or not so calm manner.
A 14-year-old 8th grader Logan, West Virginia found himself in hot water after deciding to wear an NRA T-Shirt to school. He didn’t stage a protest or say anything about the shirt, simply wore a T-shirt with the NRA logo on it to school. The NRA logo has two guns in the logo and looks like this:
The 14-year-old who has identified himself to the news media, Jared Marcum, made it till lunchtime when a teacher spotted the “offensive” shirt and ordered him to turn it inside out. Jared Marcum refused, saying that the T-shirt did not violate any school rules and was not against the dress code. I have examined the schools dress code and found this regarding logos on
T-shirts. The dress code prohibits clothing and accessories that display profanity, violence, discriminatory messages or sexually suggestive phrases. Ok so far no violation. It also prohibits advertisements for any alcohol, tobacco, or drug product but that would not fit this case. So it appears that Jared Marcum was correct. His shirt does NOT violate the schools dress code. When Jared refused to turn his shirt inside out, the teacher did not call his parents, or send him to the office, NO. They got the police involved. That’s right they called the cops.

When the police arrived Jared Marcum was attempting to explain that he was exercising his right to free speech he was told to sit down and be quiet. Mr. Marcum refused, he says politely, and said, “No, I am exercising my right to free speech.” He says no physical altercation occurred. Jared Marcum is now charged with ”disrupting an educational process and obstructing an officer.”
Alright, to me this is absolutely ridiculous. I have never heard of such stupidity on the part of a school or the police department when handling an unruly 8th grader. In fact he doesn’t even seem all that unruly. He seems to be exercising his right to wear an NRA T-shirt which is not prohibited in the schools dress code. The NRA logo does not promote violence or gang type behavior.
Is this what we have come to? We are arresting 8th graders for wearing an NRA T-shirt? Where the hell is your head Logan Middle school? This is a shame and a mockery of our right to free speech. You had an 8th grader arrested for refusing to turn his shirt wrong side out? Who is more guilty of disrupting an educational process Jared Marcum or the idiot teacher who called in the police, about a T-shirt that no one had even noticed until lunch time. Seriously, someone should charge the teacher with disrupting the educational process. Obstructing an officer for refusing to shut up about his right to wear what he chooses and what his parents approve? Seriously? This is a case that will highlight the public’s hoplophobic terror.
Are we really so terrified of the NRA logo that we are arresting 8th graders for wearing them? What kind of society are we living in? This is becoming more and more dangerous and more and more like communism by the moment. Now we can’t wear T-shirts with an NRA logo on them. Why? It doesn’t promote violence, it isn’t inflammatory, and it is that kids right to wear it. Where is your head at? I am so disgusted at this point, that I am beginning to agree with all the radicals who think we need to do away with the department of education. If this is the crap we are teaching in our schools, and the type of thing we do to handle a kid in T-shirt then I feel my tax dollars are wasted on that teacher. Once again let me reiterate, if you can possibly afford it, send your kids to private school, or maybe all the schools should get a uniform. Make the freedom of expression limitation a reality instead of a pick and choose. Disgusted doesn’t even begin to describe my opinion on this.
