Who or What Do You Represent?

When I drive down the street in my F150, I need to be cognizant of my 2012 Romney decal. Any poor perception of my driving by a former Romney supporter might be attributed to my brand of truck (Ford), or even ignored. However, some on the left - if they see my sticker - may assign my driving skills to Republicans. This is unfortunate, but is to be expected. Humans classify.

Not my truck decal, but similar.

My company warns us that while we wear the corporate badge we represent the employer, and bad behavior on our part can be falsely perceived by a customer or a vendor as supported by the business.

I’m not proposing for us to be goody-two-shoes adults, but anything I do in public can and probably will be unfairly associated with my appearance. I wear FDNY, NYPD, and so-called ‘patriotic’ hats, and when people see me they may think of men in general, guys with grey beards, white people, Americans, or older, middle-aged people. I understand that, but don’t always remember.

Which team’s colors do you wear?
Which team’s colors do you wear?

I recently visited St. Louis and with a group of friends from all over the country, and many of us attended a Cardinals MLB game. Several wore jerseys and/or caps of other teams, as I did. For example, some of the MLB-represented teams were the Giants, Rockies, Royals, Braves, Mets, White Sox, and the Cardinals fans were terrific. However, if one of us did something stupid, it’s possible that the locals would have attributed our craziness with our team. I’d be embarrassed if someone hated the Rockies because of something I did! Yet, I had to live with that possibility. I can’t help what I look like, nor how anyone perceives me, but neither can anyone else.

How you act in public can reflect on others’ impressions of your image.

I’ve been picked on as a youth by all kinds of people, mainly because I was excessively short as a youngster. However, I’ve noticed that I most clearly remember those who didn’t look like me. An extremely heavy Caucasian boy bullied me in high school and I had a hard time accepting overweight people for a long time. (Some of you thought I was going to use a different example, right?) Not the fault of any obese people I met since, but my feelings were human. I eventually overcame this, but it took a lot of time, and plenty of introspection. His momentary pleasure gave me years of prejudice and anxiety.

What the bully looks like can influence the victim for years.

I’m not saying anyone is perfect, including me, but shouldn’t we think more often of the way people perceive us? Which logos, jerseys, or colors do you wear? How will someone perceive you as you move through your public life? Who do you represent?
