You may only live here…and not there - because ‘we’ say so…
You may only live here…not there, because ‘we’ say so…

On the popular call-in program, Washington Journal, host Greta Brawner asked guest Annalee Newitz on June 5, 2013, “What is the role of government in safeguarding the cities…preventing the mass extinction of urban areas?” As President Obama has said, Annalee replied that we must invest in research to eliminate our dependence on fossil fuels and heavily polluting materials (not a bad long-term goal, by the way - if the investment doesn’t break the bank). But she also wants governments to use ‘better’ city planning – as laid out in great detail by the authors of the United Nations’ Agenda 21. Why is that scary? Partly because those who have hijacked the environmental movement have specified how large your home should be (you don’t need so much room, you glutton!) and exactly how much lighting is “just enough.” How dare they?

To protect ‘biodiversity,’ you may not leave your city.
To protect ‘biodiversity,’ you may not leave your city.

One way for humans to survive, Annalee says, is for them to move underground. Why would that happen? She uses arguments employed largely by the left. Radiation disasters, no doubt from an evil nuclear power (the U.S.!), or caused by right-wing war (how can war be conservative?), or even an industrial accident (those evil corporations)! Gamma rays from a nearby star (also proposed), although low, sounded like a higher probability to me.

Do your descendants a favor.
Do your descendants a favor.

Newitz admitted that high-density areas leave open the possibilities for pandemic diseases. The fix? In that case, everyone must get vaccinated. Not only must they do this for themselves, they must do so for their neighbors. Sounds like communitarianism to me. One caller actually brought that up, but she pooh-poohed it. Annalee, who probably means well, also said that these engineered cities need to be social organisms. They would care for the people in them, right down to jobs, health, and feeding them. Can anyone say, “nanny state?” As the Agenda 21 planners say, Annalee repeated that these cities will need to have farms (not suburbs) around them. She even uses the Agenda 21 terms, “urban sprawl” to describe suburbia, and “city centre” to direct us to what we now call the downtown. In addition, these high-density areas would contain skyscraper farms containing solar-powered greenhouses, some with every floor this way. Paid for, how?

Save mankind from tyranny.
Save mankind from tyranny.

Out of the way baboons, the U.N. knows a better way. Cities need to be flexible. Have to. This is a phrase, like must, used by those who insist on a solution. Generally, it’s their way – or the highway… Living underground sounds scary, but, don’t worry, earth-sheep! Annalee Newitz says that even though your cities would have vines everywhere and scarred bridges (from smart, self-healing materials, of course!) on the outside, your high-tech stuff, like the Internet and your beloved cell phones would still be there, inside. (Don’t believe for a second that those tyrants would be benevolent dictators.) Her book is titled, Scatter, Adapt, and Remember – How Humans will Survive a Mass Extinction. What a strange dream…unless we let the U.N. and the bullies push this horror on us. In that case, consign your descendants to a life they want them to live.

Annalee Newitz
Annalee Newitz

Annalee Newitz wrote a book about the future called, Scatter, Adapt, and Remember. Optimistic about our survival, the author, according to reviews, proposes ways we can overcome a mass extinction. That’s better than fine. You might not believe this, but I applaud those who think about the years to come and propose solutions.

Scatter, Adapt, Remember
Scatter, Adapt, Remember

However, Newitz’ June 5, 2013 Washington Journal appearance revealed a bit more. She echoed many of the plans the United Nations has for the world’s population. If they could only control you, they would solve the world’s largest environmental issues, including: overpopulation, hunger, global warming (CO2 poisoning), and species extinctions. The world would be such a better place if unimportant and irrelevant you had no say in its future… Yikes, if only I were making this up! Welcome to U.N. Agenda 21. (I dare you to Google “Agenda 21” – go ahead. However, it is not really voluntary, as many claim. Pay special attention to how they want to change consumption patterns… but I digress…)

io9.com
io9.com

Annalee’s website is: io9.com. As they say on Red Eye, check it out, check-it-outers. With host Greta Browner, Newitz discussed the biological city, mentioned the bio and alternative fuels, “that might be grown, in and around cities.” 50 years from now – but only if we use bio materials – “cities would look a lot [like] the way they do now.” (What if we don’t use bio materials?) She speculated that unsafe bridges would heal themselves by producing scar material. I don’t see how that could make a structure safer, but that’s just me, I guess. Cities 150 years out might be covered in vines or algae. (Remember President Obama’s comment about algae?) These genetically modified plants would provide fuel, food, water purification, and lighting. So, instead of burning nasty “fossil fuel to have your lights on at night, you might just have algae that glows.” She says the science is here. Really? Then why is no one using it?

Stay tuned for part III, here next week.

Annalee Newitz: Death-Proofing / Designing Future Cities – U.N. Agenda 21 Reborn

by Mark A. Cohen

Annalee Newitz
Annalee Newitz

Annalee Newitz wrote an article recently, published in Discover Magazine and partly found online (you have to pay to see it all), about the future of cities. She appeared on Washington Journal on June 5, 2013, to speak about it. Newitz doesn’t talk about traditional growth, however. Annalee says, “…we’ll probably convert urban spaces into biological organisms.” No, these are not edible cities, but places where bridges repair themselves and show evidence of healing through scarring. “The biological city could provide us with food and energy security for millennia to come.” Her article is entitled, How to Death-Proof the Cities of the Future. It’s based on her book, Scatter, Adapt, and Remember – How Humans Will Survive a Mass Extinction. Ms. Newitz speculates that “the whole planet may be about to enter a new phase of mass extinction,” and most of these have been caused by climate change. So, here we go again… “The evidence is mounting…” she says. What evidence? Climate change (I just said that!), of course, which is the environmentalists’ new, more politically correct term for man-made Global Warming. More evidence for you, she says, is that so many species went extinct over the last 200 years. I’m not making this up!

Learning about Agenda 21
Learning about Agenda 21

Newitz, a likeable personality, is a futurist to be sure, and is generally thoughtful when it comes to mankind's future. However, with regard to worldly disasters she appears in almost every way to support the United Nation's Agenda 21, the environmentalist's master plan for changing human society into a single communitarian state. Keywords are "sustainable" and "smart," among others. Listen for them.

Agenda 21 – The Trojan Horse
Agenda 21 – The Trojan Horse

”Cities are a place where most people will be living over the next, coming centuries...” Environmentalists (and others) are rooting for this. The U.N. estimates that by 2050, 67% of the world’s populations will be living in cities.” Remember, Agenda 21, comes from the U.N. They created this rigid plan for the 21st Century in the late 1980’s, for your descendants to live where the rule-makers want them to live – in cities, where they can be more easily manipulated and controlled. It must be our immediate goal to focus on cities, she says, “if we want to see the future of humanity progress.” Like most proponents of Agenda 21 and the new, radical environmental movement, she seems to think that if we don’t force people into cities against their will, we will regress, and, as we know, that simply is not true.

The city is a process, according to Annalee Newitz.
The city is a process, according to Annalee Newitz.

Ms. Newitz then concludes, as do urban planners through Agenda 21, that “we need to be pushing our cities toward being more survivable.” This means preparedness, such as for natural disasters. That sounds okay. But then she tells us we must change the materials we make cities out of, like self-healing, or smart materials. As you recall, Agenda 21 calls for more smart growth. It took less than four minutes for her to utter the word, “sustainable,” the mainstay of Agenda 21.

Agenda 21 – Your descendants will live where WE say…
Agenda 21 – Your descendants will live where WE say…

What is Progress?

by Mark A. Cohen

I’m now active on Twitter. Please follow me there at @markacohen

Progress

Since the end of the U.S. Civil War, Americans have defined progress as increased manufacturing on all levels, suburban sprawl, and technological advances, in other words, more of everything. We all enjoyed when the U.S. economy boomed. Thriving businesses, higher profits, leisure time spent on cruise ships, more travel, etc. Everyone tells me that they don’t look back; we must progress - and move forward. But, what do they mean?

The left conditioned us to think that moving backward connotes conditions worse than we experience now, and yet, some people secretly love them. While laying this groundwork, they used negatives like slavery, oppressive working conditions, and a time when women couldn’t vote as a way to define bygone eras. They also perpetuated a shocking myth, which more and more people believe: cretins, monsters, and most conservatives pine for such days to return! As a youth, I preferred to think of the past as a peaceful and simpler time - before machines made annoying, vibrating noises. But I lost. You can’t have it both ways (the past can’t be both good and bad), they said. So, I learned that progress is the combination of human, societal AND technological advances, all together. Progress, they said. So, we embraced the ever-increasing human population – more meant better, faster. Propeller planes died off in favor of quicker jets. We hailed mechanical inventions and new ways to use the earth’s abundant and self-renewing resources became a rallying cry. At some point I accepted this meaning, also my left-wing parents’ definition of ‘progress.’

Progress

Carly Fiorina, past president of HP, said this at the Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC) meeting in early 2012: "If you looked up the word PROGRESSIVE in the dictionary, you would read words like change, forward motion, advancing. If you look up CONSERVATIVE, you will read opposed to change. The 21st century and the age of technology have turned these definitions on their head. It is progressives who fight to preserve a system of big government and institutional power that is increasingly anachronistic (backward looking) and ineffective – not to mention too expensive. It is conservatives who are fighting to limit the power of bureaucracies and unleash the power of the individual (this is the way forward). Progressives are fighting against the tide of history and the power of technology. Conservatives embrace the principles upon which our great nation was founded and upon which the new world of the 21st century must be built: empower the individual, unleash the entrepreneur and truly unlock the potential of this great nation."

Long ago the left revered freedom and individual liberties. Today it unknowingly works to remove them, as many as possible, for some “greater good.” This is communitarianism; the community is more valuable than the person. Cleaning up the earth and keeping it pristine for future generations is a good idea, but, as I’ve shown in this blog, idealistic concepts have been molded into cases for command and control. The creators called such perversions their “Agenda 21.”

Progress

The sweet dream of living in a large house with two (or even, God forbid, three) cars with lots of kids became a sort of horror for some. Instead of viewing inspirational stories as moving on up, the elites see these formerly progressive lifestyles as wasteful and destructive. Doing well for yourself and the family? Not so fast, they consider this selfish, not successful, optimistic, or refreshing. The ideal is now a small apartment, light rail, and a timid, small family. How did this happen? Why?

Progress

The environmentalists re-defined the original definition of progress the left taught many of us. Instead of enjoying one’s time off by ‘taking a drive,’ they now frown upon the burning of gasoline and favor trains over cars. Take a moment to notice: they frown a lot and favor the pessimistic outlook. Instead of celebrating people and society, they think that human populations spoil the world’s finite resources; they want us to return to the time of horses and buggies. Living in more compact confines, using fewer kilowatt hours, smaller and smaller footprints save the earth, they say. Freedom be damned, so instead they ask, “Is it sustainable?” Environmentalists have the gall to tell us that “the future is the past.” But, how is moving backward a valid definition of ‘forward?’

I ask you, “What is progress?”

Agenders – Who Are They and What Do They Want?

by Mark A. Cohen

Agenders Logo Agenders Poster

Agenda 21 was an idea environmentalists thought up to leave the earth a better place than they found it for the 21st Century. Many years ago extremists flipped this idealistic pipe dream over and turned it into Earth Day Gone Wild. If implemented as designed, national sovereignty and private property rights will disappear forever, and a tight set of controls will remain - forced down your throat by a more knowledgeable elite. Those who resist this form of rigid control are called Agenda 21 Enders, or Agenders.

They are certainly not ‘The Avengers,’ but who are the Agenders? Dr. Ileana Johnson Paugh, in a post entitled ’Agenders’ and Right Wing Conspirators, on the Canada Free Press web site on Feb. 12, 2012, examined an article written by Andrew Cohen (no relation) in The Atlantic about a week earlier. She accurately pointed out that Mr. Cohen, like most Agenda 21 supporters, completely misrepresented not only U.N. Agenda 21, but why many oppose it. In his piece, Is the UN Using Bike Paths to Achieve World Domination?, Andrew Cohen implied the Agenders are extremists. In fact, they are not out of the main stream, but informed citizens. Many Americans will not stand for the radical U.N. rules (termed ‘guidelines’) which, if ever set in stone, would remove many freedoms we take for granted. We, too, love our planet, but we don’t agree with the ‘save the earth - or die’ mentality. That is what is too extreme for us.

Mr. Andrew Cohen, it's not the science or stewardship of the earth we oppose. It's the politicization of the environmental movement. For example, if the earth is warming, great, we can all agree if the evidence presents itself. But scientists who tell us it's man-made have already manipulated their statistics to support a favorite outcome. Why? It’s due to politics, but as odd as it may seem, this is not a left-right issue!

A few years ago, some reporters revealed in secret e-mails that global warming scientists in Europe admitted exaggerating / making up data to prove their points. The fact that their goal is more important than science is what makes it political. Look at the people who profit from selling items from the scare. Al Gore is one who spoke against large carbon footprints. Yet, videos surfaced showing him boarding private jets, which ‘exhale’ many times the carbon per person than commercial flight. Why do the alarmists use these gas guzzlers? Perhaps they don't believe that carbon as a poison, either, especially if they have to sacrifice, too!

Charles Komanoff and the Carbon Tax, a Part of U.N. Agenda 21 – Liberals Don’t Care About You - Conservatives Do Care About You

by Mark A. Cohen

Charles Komanoff

The second segment of Washington Journal on Nov. 17, 2012 featured the director of the Carbon Tax Center, guest Charles Komanoff. He proposes raising your taxes even higher than President Obama will. However, Mr. Komanoff assured us that penalties for consuming carbon is a bipartisan issue. He said, “…it’s not a Democratic idea or a Republican idea, it’s not a liberal idea or a conservative idea,” it’s for all of us. And, not to worry, it won’t be imposed on the American public directly, but rather on the producers of carbon-based energy. This will clean up the earth and prevent weather disasters, Mr. Koumanoff claimed. How nice, you might think, until you dig deeper.

Mr. Koumanoff dragged Agenda 21 into his discussion when he said that getting the planet more ‘sustainable’ is the right thing to do. For those who don’t know, Agenda 21, or sustainability theory, is the United Nation’s plan to control our population, climate, and herd world citizens into ‘habitation zones.’ Nice, huh?

He admitted that a carbon tax will, as President Obama once said, increase everyone’s cost for coal, electricity, gasoline and heating oil (“dirty energy,” in Mr. Koumanoff’s words). He’s okay with that because, in his opinion, we must switch over to wind, solar, and all renewable fuels, no matter how much it costs individuals, and regardless of whether the new energy industries are ready. They don’t care. The environmentalists wish to turn the screws until we, the people, suffer.

And, please don’t be upset with the owners of companies. Any business hit with higher taxes will, as is natural, pass the cost on to the consumer, and, in some cases, fire some workers. Why? Well, they take these actions not out of cruelty, but because higher taxes always hurt the bottom line. In order to remain in business they must make these adjustments. The point is to keep people employed, and not break the backs of businesses. Right?

A caller told Mr. Koumanoff that he makes $10 per hour, and in response Mr. Koumanoff incredulously blasted Republicans for their stance against labor unions! He berated the Republicans for their imposition of policies over the last 30 years, “which have increased economic inequality, which have turned high paying union jobs into your $10 an hour probably non-union jobs. We’ve got to turn that around but at the same time we’ve got to protect the climate of this country.” (I thought he said this was a bipartisan issue!) Mr. Koumanoff then claimed, without any proof, that the recent severe storms (Katrina and Sandy) were caused by increased man-made carbon emissions - and not increased photon emissions from the sun! Which side is clinging to some irrational belief and ignoring science?

The higher price of energy (gasoline, for example), affects the poor more than anyone, and they can least afford it. This shows how the left doesn’t care about the little guy, but they do care greatly about their fantastic ideas for creating a utopia they can never achieve. Their governmental programs, centered on a failed War on Poverty, simply made things worse.

Mr. Koumanoff means well, but is yet another environmentalist who knows better than you about your preferences and needs. For example, he said that living in a smaller home is a good way to save energy. The director of the Carbon Tax Center could care less about how you want to live your life. “We could go back to 2,000 square foot homes from 4,000 square foot homes.” So, move out, fool! This is a part of Agenda 21, all incentivized, Mr. Koumanoff admitted, through the carbon tax. His group believes that carbon dioxide, rather than being a requisite chemical we need for our life cycle on earth, is a deadly poison! Fortunately, until Agenda 21 is fully implemented, you can still decide for yourself. Check out Mr. Koumanoff’s web site at carbontax.org.

U.N.’s Agenda For the 21st Century – Very Interesting, But Disturbing

by Mark A. Cohen

I'm no expert on the transparent and gigantic U.N. Agenda 21 movement yet, but from my research so far, it sounds like a wonderful idea. Save the world for future generations, they say. How can anyone argue with that? However, while reading ICLEI and many other documents supporting the idea of changing the world for the benefit of those not yet born, I feel sick, and I think I now know why.

Carbon dioxide, this movement says, is a poison and must be purged from our environment via incredible reduction goals with no regard to how this is to be done. It features a subtle push to indoctrinate our descendants into a supreme worship of the United Nations and its sustainability culture – over and above patriotism for one's own country. The Agenda for the 21st century, like many far-left radicals, assaults superior nations' successes as evil, militaristic and violent, material, and too focused upon production and consumption. It counts on local governments and their power to suggest in detail, how to rearrange society and its infrastructure, for what they believe is in the best interests of mankind. Those most convinced of business' propensity to pollute must ask, "Who the heck are these people, what is at the heart of their desires, and why do they know best?" In other words, "They are not the boss of me," and, "Who put them in charge?"

The environmentalists believe in empowering the U.N. as a global government, over-regulating and threatening personal freedoms (such as property rights) for the relentless purpose of reducing earth's carbon footprint. Sorry, I pledged my allegiance to America, and, much as I love her, not to Mother Earth. I think that carbon dioxide is a gas and not a threat, and that global warming is not man-made, but a blip in the climactic ups and downs of this planet.

This movement is socialist in nature, favoring in every respect, the community over the individual. For that alone I must oppose it – although I assert that their goal, of maintaining the earth for the future - is a respectable one. We hear the lie every day: Conservatives support dirtier air and water. No, we don't. But we don't like to be forced into doing anything, and as Americans, we all like our freedoms and choose over and over again to protect them.

Many on the right call Agenda 21 a conspiracy and a power-grab, but, although it might be both, I choose to resist those temptations - at least for now. I'll try to dig deeper into Agenda 21 and report back to you what I find. If you find yourself curious, please check out the Agenda 21 links provided in this blog post. Each one will link to others. The amount of information on the web is enormous, so a handful of links will get you started. After you get started, Google: Sustainability [your city], [your state] and if they are implementing or plan to implement Agenda 21 in your area soon, you will find out.
