Santorum pointed out he has now tied Reagan with 11 primary/caucus victories as a conservative candidate trying to defeat a moderate establishment candidate. Reagan lost the nomination to then-President Gerald Ford in 1976, who went on to lose a close election to Jimmy Carter. Carter’s election led to a disastrous four years for the United States economically and militarily.
