Today's Riff....
It’s hard to be an optimist in the world we are now living in, isn’t it?
I won’t burden you with my take on our society in this country or any other for that matter. Trust me to say it concerns me the way we get the news reported to us.
I have a hard time believing anything I read or see on our plethora of news sources available to us in this country.
About the only way you can judge for yourself as to what other folks in this great country of ours think is to get out of your house and go somewhere and talk to people.
That’s just what happened to me this week.
By now, if you’ve ever read any of my stuff you will know that I am old. Like 81 years old.
So last week one of my sons arranged for the two of us to fly from Houston to Boston watch a Astros/ Red Sox game in Fenway Park.
Which we did.
Arrived on Tuesday, walked around downtown and saw all of the historical sites we needed to see then on to the park for the game.
Beautiful day, great seats, sitting in with a group of Red Sox fans enjoying an afternoon game of American most popular past time.
My son and I like to talk to strangers. That’s how we get to know folks and listen to their lives.
We were in heaven.
My son Chris, is an avid baseball fan….knows all the stats, all the players and all of the potential teams to make the run off into the world series.
Me? I don’t know anything about any of it. It’s all foreign to me. I’m the guy who sat down to lunch next to a guy named Joe Morgan and asked him what he did for a living. That’s another story for later….turned out for the good.
Anyway, we are sitting behind a guy and his father and 2 small grandchildren about 5 and 3 years old. The old guy never misses a game, the kids eat everything, popcorn, peanuts hot dogs and there might have been some ice cream in there somewhere, it was hard to keep track.
The folks next to us was a Doctor from Odessa Texas and his daughter. My son goes to Odessa all the time, so they had a chance to talk it up during the game.
We’re looking around during the entire 9 innings (Houston won) and it occurs to me that this is America. The real America. This is the epidemy of our nation. Folks from all over Texas, New England, Red necks, Liberals, Red Sox and Astros fans sitting together on a warm summer afternoon watching a bunch of grown men play baseball.
It doesn’t get any better than that in my opinion.
We met the people running the restaurant in our hotel. Common folks trying to make a living.
The cab drivers who ferried us around town from place to place.
The folks from Florida who accepted part of a way too large seafood dinner and then talked to us for hours.
The staff at the hotel who checked us in and got us cabs and cleaned our rooms.
All of these folks have lives and their own troubles, but for a brief moment in time, they talked to us about things that mattered to them. Their future, their kids, their dreams and how lucky we were to just be alive.
Everyone who knows me knows that I have a favorite saying that goes like this:
When I step off my porch in the morning into a big pile of horse poop…..
I’m happy, since I know there is a pony out here somewhere.
Chris, we shared a memory and we go to see the pony, didn’t we?
Hey listen, I’m working on getting back into the swing of these things after being off for so long. Last week I hit a button on Facebook wrong and I think it sent out some kind of a response. I’m not trying to sell you anything, I just want to write and try to make folks have a better day. So bear with me if you will. I will soon learn how to fix it where you can follow me if you would like to do so. By all means tell me if you like what I write or don’t like. I’ll try to fix it , if possible…but old guys find it hard to change their ways….see you next week….look for the pony..ok?
