Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral platform reads like a progressive dream: rent freezes, fare-free buses, universal child care, city-owned grocery stores, and higher taxes on the wealthy. But here’s the cold truth—most of it can’t happen without Albany’s blessing.

New York City may be big, bold, and brash, but it’s still tethered to the state’s leash. The governor and state legislature hold the power to approve rent regulations, tax hikes, and sweeping social programs. That means Mamdani’s most ambitious promises—freezing rents, taxing billionaires, and universal child care—are dead on arrival without state cooperation.

So what can he do?

✅ What Mamdani Could Do Without State Approval

• Fare-Free Buses: NYC’s mayor can subsidize MTA bus fares using city funds. While the MTA is state-controlled, the city can negotiate or pilot fare-free programs.

• City-Owned Grocery Stores: The city has full authority to launch and operate municipal grocery stores through its economic development agencies. No state permission needed.

🚫 What Requires Albany’s Permission

• Rent Freezes: Rent regulation is governed by New York State law. The mayor can advocate, but not unilaterally impose freezes.

• Universal Child Care: NYC can expand subsidized programs, but full universal coverage demands state and federal funding.

• Higher Taxes on the Wealthy and Corporations: The city cannot raise income or corporate taxes without approval from the state legislature and governor.

Even if Mamdani wins the mayor’s seat, he’ll need to win over the statehouse too. Otherwise, his platform becomes a pamphlet of good intentions with no legislative legs.

New Yorkers deserve bold ideas—but they also deserve honest roadmaps. If Mamdani wants to lead the city into a new era, he’ll need more than votes. He’ll need permission.

For Republicans Sake Zohran Mamdani MUST Win NYC Mayor

 

In New York City, State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani has emerged as the Democratic nominee for mayor—a self-described democratic socialist whose platform embraces expansive government intervention. What’s striking isn’t just Mamdani’s ideology, but how comfortably it’s been embraced by key figures in the Democratic Party: Barack Obama, Governor Kathy Hochul, Congressman Jerry Nadler, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Senator Bernie Sanders, among others.

It raises a question: Are Democrats now openly aligning with full-blown socialism and progressive orthodoxy? It seems so. Many younger Millennials and Gen Z voters, having grown up after the Cold War, 9/11, Vietnam, and Korea, lack firsthand experience with the ideological battles that shaped earlier generations. Their enthusiasm for socialism often leaves older observers perplexed. They romanticize visions rooted in Marxist theory—“from each according to his ability, to each according to his need”—without reckoning with the historical consequences of centralized control and state ownership.

The COVID era, with its stimulus checks and expanded benefits, offered a taste of government largesse with seemingly no strings attached. That moment, for some, became a gateway to believing in limitless public provision. Mamdani’s platform builds on that sentiment: fare-free buses, universal childcare, rent freezes, city-run grocery stores, and steep taxes on corporations and high earners—all framed as moral imperatives.

Ironically, I hope Mamdani wins. Not because I support his policies, but because some lessons must be lived to be learned. Socialism, in practice, has repeatedly faltered. Even Nordic countries—often cited as success stories—are now grappling with demographic strain, aging populations, and migration pressures that test the sustainability of their models.

If New York elects a mayor whose platform includes defunding the police, expanding public ownership, and distancing from Israel, the consequences will be theirs to bear. History has a way of clarifying ideology through experience. Let the results speak louder than rhetoric.

New Yorkers, Drink That Soda!

An appeals court in New York found that Mayor Bloomberg’s soda ban was overreach and such a decision would have to come from the City Council.  This is some common sense after the most ridiculous nanny effort in history.  Bloomberg says he disagrees with the decision (obviously) and will appeal.   However, this is the second court in a row that has come down against the ban, so that doesn’t bode well for him.  However, it does bode well for the people of New York City.  They have to live with high taxes, tons of regulations, and the most expensive cost of living in the country.  At least now they know they can go get a Big Gulp if they want one.

The American Beverage Distributors are happy of course. According to CNN, they are vowing to “collaborating with city leaders on solutions that will have a meaningful and lasting impact on the people of New York City.”  Well, okay, no one actually believes that but you’ve got to say the right thing in these sort of situations.

Further, according to the Wall Street Journal, the appeals court stated in its opinion that the Board of Health, which initiated the ban at the request of Bloomberg, did not do any of its own research and basically rubber-stamped Bloomberg’s request.  The judges wrote, “The rule was drafted, written and proposed by the Office of the Mayor and submitted to the board, which enacted it without substantive changes.  Under the circumstances, it cannot be said that the Board of Health’s technical competence was necessary to flesh out details of the legislative policies.”

In other words, this was really just an edict fro Nanny Bloomberg to the people of New York City.  Although Bloomberg says he will pursue further, his days are numbered given the upcoming election, so this battle may have to wait for the future mayor of New York.
