Don't Let Obama Change The Subject

Mitt Romney has spent a lot of time responding to Obama's new immigration policy to shamelessly pander to Hispanic voters by saying he'll officially ignore their illegal cousins. This was undoubtedly a shrewd move by the White House, and immigration may be a weak point for Romney. (Which itself speaks volumes about our country, considering Romney is dead on--but that's a story for a different day.) But the real victory for Obama is yet another distraction away from his record. The MSM loves to jump at whatever the White House throws at them to not report what they should be--the economy.
The trick is for Romney not to fall into the same trap. Obama is controlling the narrative. Romney's campaign got nervous, sensing Obama's figured out a way to woo the Hispanic vote, which could heavily impact the critical swing state of Florida. So they panic. They feel they need a comeback. Meanwhile, the focus is not where it should be.
Romney's best shot at winning is to keep hitting Obama where it hurts. No amount of pandering can overcome his complete failure as president. His biggest weakness is his record. But if you talk about his promises for the future, you've played right into his hands. That's Obama's strategy--"Forget my awful record, listen to my big plans." Romney's job is essentially to stay on message at all costs.
Think back to 1992. Clinton/Carville's brilliance was to make the campaign revolve around a single slogan--"It's The Economy Stupid." In other words, nothing else really matters. It totally neutralized President Bush. They made it impossible for him to win, by arguing that his past failures eclipsed anything he had to say. Romney has to follow the Clinton mantra.
It takes discipline. Obama had a minor victory with this immigration announcement. If you're Romney, you feel outwitted, and you're desperate to respond. But you've got to think big picture. Stay focused on reminding people that Obama is a terrible president and remind them why. You'll find that they won't be so impressed with his desire to keep illegals here once they put things into perspective.
