Apparently the city of Phoenix is looking to hire Minority lifeguards, even lifeguards that aren’t good swimmers. That’s right, Officials are looking for Blacks, Latinos and Asians. Even ones who don’t have the swimming skills to be a lifeguard. NPR reported that city official Melissa Boyle told the students that being a strong swimmer doesn’t matter.
“We will work with you in your swimming abilities.”
Boyle’s colleague Kelly Martinez said, ” the kids in the pool are all either Hispanic or black or whatever, and every lifeguard is white and we don’t like that. ”
Ummmm since when did someone have to be your friend to save your behind from drowning and keep order at a public pool? I mean honestly, I do understand that it would be good to have diversity, but seeking people who are not the best for the job because of skin color is in fact racism. Why can’t the kids in the pool look past the whiteness of the lifeguards skin? Let me tell you, if the kid was drowning, you can bet your last dime, that the kid wont care if the one who pulls them out of the water is black, white, Hispanic, Asian, or whatever.
Swimming is still considered a “white sport” by many and a National study released in 2010 found African-Americans and Latinos reported much lower swimming proficiency. The city of Phoenix believes that by diversifying their lifeguards, they will encourage more kids to learn swimming.
This has gotten so out of hand. I cannot even tell you how dangerous this is. I mean just listen to the quote of Jesus Jiminez, who is a candidate to be a lifeguard.
“Honestly, I have a little bit a fear of the water, and I wanted to overcome that fear,”
Are you kidding me? This is not the type of class to help people overcome their fear of water. That is beginner swimming. By the time you get to lifeguard training you should have ZERO fear for your own safety, and be the type of person who would plunge in without a thought that you might drown.
We are starting to play with people’s lives in the name of diversity. I certainly would encourage Black and Latinos to learn to swim, but getting your first swim lessons in your lifeguard training, is dangerous and stupid. What the hell is Phoenix thinking? Please, for the love of the kids in the pool, stop the craziness, and hire competent lifeguards, whatever their skin color. Racism exists in many forms. Hiring sub par employees because of the color of their skin is in fact racist.

This is what happens when political correctness runs amok in society. Common sense and intelligence is tossed out the window in the name of diversity, warm fuzzy feelings, hugs and now we can celebrate with riding rainbows and unicorn farts.
I can see it now, poor Becky drowned at the public pool earlier today when the lifeguards on duty, Jesus, Maria and Buckwheat were unable to enter the water for fear of drowning themselves.
The skin color of poor Becky will not matter until legal action is instigated by Becky's grieving parents.
