Say what you will about Governor Perry’s performance during the presidential primary.  He was pretty bad, we all admit.  But he and many like-minded pro-life legislatures the reason that there will be fewer abortions performed in Texas.

The Texas law, passed in the second special session for the TX legislature, bans abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.  The dog and pony show at the capital over the past few weeks by pro-abortion activists holding hangers and screaming at members of the TX senate thankfully was not enough to get the outcome they were looking for, though I have no doubt they are regrouping for future fights.

As Reuters reports:
“Most people, I think, in this country – and in Texas,  certainly – believe that six months is too late to be deciding  whether or not these babies should be aborted or not. And we put  the limit at five months in this bill,” Perry told the CNN  program “State of the Union.”
The Texas measure marks the latest effort by Republicans at  the state level to impose new restrictions on abortions, which  were legalized nationally in a 1973 U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

“This gets back to the issue of should the states be able to  make these decisions or should we allow this big, cumbersome  federal government to decide for all of us,” Perry added. “I  happen to be one of the people that believes that the federal  government should do a few things and do them well, and then  allow the states to make the decisions on these types of  issues.”

The Texas measure would make Texas the 13th of the 50 U.S.  states to pass a ban on abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy -  a provision based on disputed research suggesting fetuses feel  pain at that point. Current limits are 26 weeks in Texas.

The measure also would impose a series of new requirements on abortion clinics and doctors who perform abortions, mandating  that doctors have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30  miles (48 km) of the clinic and creating stricter guidelines for  how doctors administer abortion-inducing drugs.

Even one week is too many to perform an abortion, but I still find myself shocked that people actually believe that babies who are more than 20 weeks old should be aborted.   Consider this from babycenter.com:

Your baby weighs about 10 1/2 ounces now. He’s also around 6 1/2 inches long from head to bottom and about 10 inches from head to heel — about the size of a banana. (For the first 20 weeks, when a baby’s legs are curled up against his torso and hard to measure, measurements are taken from the top of his head to his bottom — the “crown to rump” measurement. After 20 weeks, he’s measured from head to toe.)

He’s swallowing more these days, which is good practice for his digestive system. He’s also producing meconium, a black, sticky by-product of digestion. This gooey substance will accumulate
in his bowels, and you’ll see it in his first soiled diaper (some babies pass meconium in the womb or during delivery).

And seriously, we have millions of people who say this is not a human?  We have women protesting that they should be able to end a child’s life at this stage?  Really?  This is not a bunch of cells, this is a baby – a real, live baby.  How is that not obvious to everyone?

Right now, any progress is something to cheer even though there are still millions of lives ended
across the country.  But, I am proud to be in Texas and also proud that the stumbling Governor Perry who could not remember the third agency he would end during that most embarrassing of debates kept focus on this one.

Abortion or Adoption?

It is with great sadness that I report to you that while at the doctor’s office last week, I read the January 14, 2013 article in Time magazine on the relentless pro-abortion movement. No, I didn’t feel badly because the author, Kate Pickert, bemoaned the fact that abortions have been declining over the past 40 years. I choked up over what might not have been. I felt a tear come to my eye!

My daughter had a son in 2008, when she was 18 – and not yet married. Right after she found out about her pregnancy and my grandson was smaller than a pencil point, she told my wife that she could never choose to have an abortion. My wife and I adopted her in early 1990, when she was three weeks old. Something I hadn’t considered to that point was that my (not politically conservative) daughter always felt a great deal of gratitude toward her birth mother, always thankful that she decided for adoption, rather than abortion. This is of paramount importance to a person incapable of exercising a ‘choice’ at the time. Rather than no existence, she was mercifully allowed to live her life – any kind of life.

With our granddaughter safely secured in her high chair, my wife and I are busy preparing a meal. My grandson helps, too. Pots and pans clang, refrigerator door opens and closes multiple times, and we all move as if in a pre-choreographed dance. ”Hey, Papa?” my four-year-old grandson asks.

”Yes?” I think he’s going to ask me something about food.

”I love you,” he says, matter-of-factly. My heart melts, and my thoughts turn to my own grandmother. She once told me that I would understand how much she loved me when I had grandchildren of my own. I can’t imagine my life without him! I wonder where I’d be if my daughter had decided upon abortion instead of seeing her pregnancy through. Everyone who meets my wonderful grandson says he’s so cute, sweet, handsome, or tells me he looks just like me! (That one always makes me smile!) Among other things, we play cars, have a catch, make popcorn, and watch movies together. When I read about advocates for abortion and their thoughts on the subject, I feel dejected and a little surprised. Too bad they don’t know me, or those like me - or my daughters’ story. I’m here to tell them. I love my family, and my grandson is one of my favorite people – ever. I also know that I’m one of his.

The Time magazine article focuses on the strategy the left concocts to suck more and more fetuses out of women’s wombs. They promise to never give up. They say a woman’s right to choose always triumphs over a baby’s right to live a life, any sort of life. They believe the cool, new term reproductive justice, sells better than the old term, pro-choice. When a cause loses its luster, the left’s activists generally change the name, as from global warming to climate change. The author of the article actually describes the procedure and unwittingly discusses the “whirring of the vacuum aspirator.” Although the piece seems thoughtful and discusses many real reasons why the number of abortions has dropped, the thought of the intentional termination of a pregnancy disgusts me more than ever, now that I know my grandson. He makes a lot of people chuckle, including me!

Adoption vs. Abortion, Which Do You Prefer?

I don’t call the supporters of abortion names, and I agree – they do have a right to choose. I don’t wish to take that choice away from anyone, but I urge them to consider adoption. It’s a lot less gory, and it hands someone a chance at living a life, any life. Perhaps they need more education about adoption. Let’s grant another grandfather a chance to hear what makes music to my ears:

My granddaughter, grandson, wife, and I are walking into Walmart. ” Papa?” my innocent, wide-eyed grandson asks. I expect him to ask a profound question about toys, marketing, or life, any of which I may have trouble answering.

”Yes?” I respond.

”I love you,” he says, with no effort whatsoever. I thank God I lived long enough to hear this!

”I love you, too,” I say, “very much. When you become a grandfather yourself, you’ll know just how much.”

California, The Leading Nanny State

Well, California is at it again. As a nanny state, California has both figuratively and literally broken the bank. Their record for stupid liberal decisions is well documented here and all across the web. Yet despite the evidence of their continuing stupidity, they keep on keepin’ on.

Just recently, Gov Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown signed legislation that bans tanning beds for those under the age of eighteen. This is outright ban, regardless of whether there is parental permission. The state of California doesn’t think that someone who is 17 can make good decisions. And as the father of a 17-year old, I happen to agree with that sentiment. However, there is a reason why 16- and 17-year old kids have parents: So they can make informed decisions about the choices their teenagers want to make. Taking away that responsibility from the parents and giving it to the state is what I am have trouble with. Why oh why do liberals and progressive think they are so much smarter than everyone else that they have to pass laws that further whittles away at parental rights? Is it not my responsibility and my right to raise my children how I see best? If I want to allow my teenager to get a suntan via a tanning bed, that is my right. But it also my responsibility to make sure that my kids are not done any harm, so I wouldn’t allow them too anyway. It still galls me that the state of California thinks they can raise my kids better than I can.

Often, the wounds inflicted on California are done by the idiots in Sacramento.

But every once in a while, the citizens themselves act like a bunch of loons.

BACKGROUND: In California, abortion providers are not required to notify parents if their daughter comes in for an abortion or for the treatment of a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Abortion providers are also not required to notify law enforcement (or they are not prosecuted if they neglect to do so) if the underage girl’s pregnancy is due to sex with an adult male, whether consensual or not. And there are toothless and unenforced against abortion providers who cover up these crimes.

From The New American:

The Prop 4 advocates claim: “On a daily basis, older men exploit young girls and use secret abortions to cover up their crimes.” They also point to numerous documented examples in which abortion providers, especially Planned Parenthood, engaged in criminal activity by covering up the rapes and statutory rapes by the adult predators. How serious is the problem? In her testimony before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee in June, 2004, Professor Teresa Collett noted:

In a study of over 46,000 pregnancies by school-age girls in California, researchers found that “71%, or over 33,000, were fathered by adult post-high-school men whose mean age was 22.6 years, and average of 5 years older than the mothers… even among junior high school mothers aged 15 or younger, most births are fathered by adult men 6-7 years their senior. Men aged 25 or older father more births among California school-age girls than do boys under 18.” Other studies have found that most teenage pregnancies are the result of predatory practices by men who are substantially older. In the excerpt above was a mention of Proposition 4, which if approved by the voters, would have forced abortion clinics, even those run by Planned Parenthood, to notify the parents if a girl under the age of 18 wanted to receive an abortion.

As for the self-inflicted wounds, voters rejected this proposition. It amazes me that the people of a state that prides itself on its free-wheeling lifestyle and supposed opened-mindedness would allow the state government to further rip away parental rights. But what would expect from a state that forces history classes to teach historical contributions of homosexuals at the exclusion of other more prominent historical figures.

To the people of California: Do you not care that a cadre of progressives has seized your state and turned into a cesspool of intolerance? Do you not see these people are stripping away your rights bit by bit? Do you now see these progressive have spent you into complete oblivion? How can you sit idly by and watch was once a great state turn into such a lousy place to live and raise children.
