Care for the Uninsurable

Care for the Uninsurable
Do you know that we now have the equipment and expertise to keep a person alive indefinitely? Maybe not REALLY alive, but with vital signs indicative that life still exists.

I wouldn’t want that. My wife and I have living wills, directing our mate and family to refuse any extraordinary measures to keep us alive after an illness or injury that incapacitates us, without a hope of recovery. To do otherwise would not only be a drain on our family’s limited resources, it would also take years off her life taking care of me, or the other way around. Why? So that I can lie there and vegetate, incapable of speaking, understanding, even feeding myself for months into years? No, thank you.

You know where I am headed with this, don’t you?

Jimmy Kimmel made a passionate plea for the continuation of Obamacare in discussing his own child born with a severe heart defect. My heart goes out to him and his family. According to Jimmy, however, had the Affordable Care Act not been enacted, there would have been no help for his child. Very moving story—full of half-truths and even lies, but very impassioned.

When is the last time you have heard of a baby being thrown out of a hospital or denied emergency medical treatment because it was born with a devastating, life-threatening abnormality? Go on; take your time; try to recall any instance remotely like that. I’ll wait.

Okay, are you finished? How many?

None. Neither the law nor common decency would permit it.

A more pertinent argument might be whether the child born with a terrible defect gets the very latest, most expensive treatment  available and ultra-Herculean efforts to sustain life for as long as possible.  Damn the cost—that child must live!!

You may believe that every child deserves that kind of treatment—no child is any more valuable than the next, right? Rich or poor, black or white, brilliant or intellectually challenged. Let’s consider that for a moment.

The plain fact is, we cannot afford to give that kind of treatment, free of charge, to all comers—from the United States or any other nation, because surely you would agree that Japanese or Egyptian or Brazilian or Australian or French or English children are just as valuable as our own American babies. Don’t you? Oh, I can just hear some few of you saying, “Wait, now. We have to draw a line somewhere!”

Ah, there’s the rub. Nobody except Nancy Pelosi believes that the American taxpayer should or could foot the bill for the latest, greatest and most expensive health care for everybody on earth. So we must have some method of limiting access to the very best of care—which, by the way, can be found . . . Where? . . . I forget. Is it France? No. Is it Canada? No. Is it England? No. Russia? Greece? Japan? Italy? Germany? No, no, no, no and no. The best health care in the world is found in the United States of America, precisely because we have thus far not allowed the government total management of that vital one-sixth of our economy.

No country, regardless how wealthy, can provide free health care to an unlimited number of people whose illness or malady, while desperate and needful of care,  could cost the taxpayers upward of $1,000,000 a year or more—per patient! That is a sad reality. Hospitals and E R’s are required to administer what aid is necessary to keep a patient alive; to do everything humanly possible to treat them—up to a point. But if the cost of that care exceeds the patient or patient’s family’s ability to pay and they do not have the insurance or personal wealth to cover such costly care, what is to be done? Reasonable people might then say those extraordinary efforts must be curtailed. Not just for John Doe or his child or grandchild, but for the progeny of Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, Chuck Schumer, Ted Turner or anyone else of wealth and power. I must say if those people have the wherewithal to purchase such treatment out of their own wealth, we have no right to deny them the privilege of spending their money in that way. Do we?

If anyone in your life has ever told you that life is fair, they either didn’t know what they were talking about, or they flat-out lied to you. Even our courts informed us in the 1970s that all Americans are equal, but . . . In certain circumstances, some are more equal than others. Remember Affirmative Action? More recently, these same courts have decreed that motivation can be a huge factor in the sentence one gets for commission of a crime. I’m not sure how you can fine-tune emotion to reach that determination, but if you are deemed to have been motivated by “hate” to murder someone, your sentence may be vastly more severe than if you, say, killed a guy that you liked. Does that make sense to you? The victim is dead in either instance, and I doubt that he is going to rejoice in his grave because a jury adjudged the crime to have been motivated by hatred. It won’t bring him back to life! And you can only put the perpetrator to death once. He can’t even twice serve his entire life in prison. Once is all you get.

But I digress. There are some serious problems we will be required to face in the not-too-distant future—as soon as we figure out how harmful political correctness has been to our nation and quit allowing secular humanists to set our entire agenda.  In order to address these issues, we must first acknowledge that we have a problem. THIS—the insurance for those with un-insurable diseases/maladies—is just one of them. Insurance for them, as you might imagine, is very expensive. Not many of us can afford it. We can, by working with a pool of like “un-insurable patients”, obtain catastrophic insurance—still expensive, but shared by a larger pool of those with the same or similar problems, costing much less than trying to buy an individual policy.

Bottom line is, we have finite resources to handle what could rapidly become an overwhelming need—or want; there is a difference. Let me say again—while it is unpleasant either to say or to hear, the plain fact is we cannot afford to pay for the health care of all those who 1) simply don’t want to purchase it for themselves, 2) are in this country illegally and have thus far not even been asked to pay for their insurance OR treatment, in some states, and 3) also provide the most expensive services in the world to a multitude of un-insurable patients.

Does political correctness allow us to consider the cause of a patient’s super-expensive malady? Can we offer less coverage to the man who smokes two or three packages of cigarettes while his lungs are eaten up with cancer? How about the alcoholic who continues drinking although he has cirrhosis of the liver? Or the promiscuous homosexual who through dangerous dating habits contracts aids? These are self-inflicted, in a sense. Are the taxpayers on the hook for all expenses related to their maladies? You see, it is easy to be compassionate regarding a baby born with a defect not of its own doing. Can we recognize the difference and make allowances therefore? You see, while secular humanists have tried hard to erase it, the fact remains, the are consequences to our actions.

We can do what many other nations have done: We can provide what may be good but is also necessarily rationed health care to our citizens. That route will inevitably lead to less research and development, a disincentive to try new methods, a loss of patient-doctor relations and a much poorer product. Sure, it might be “free”. But the participant gives up much freedom to obtain what is neither truly free nor effective.

I do not regard the advice of Ezekiel Emanuel, one of the founders of Obamacare, who sees no reason to live past seventy or so; you ostensibly have little or nothing to offer society, so you might as well die.

President Obama told a woman in July of 2009 that perhaps her mother, with a serious heart condition, ‘may be better off, uhh, not having the surgery, but, uhh, taking the pain pill’.

No, I do not intend to go quietly to my grave, although when my time does come, would that I could mimic the actions of an old ranch hand I read about years ago.

This fellow had worked as a cowboy for the same man since his teens. He and his boss grew old together. The old cowboy was married, and as he saddled up his horse and left the house on a typical morning shortly after his 80th birthday, he said his usual goodbye to his wife and headed off, supposedly to ride the fence line. When he did not come home that day and stayed out all night, his wife contacted the ranch owner to let him know her husband was missing.

They found the old cowboy on the south forty, lying on his back with his hat over his chest, hands folded beneath it. They first thought he had fallen off his horse, but that was quickly discounted. This man was practically born on a horse. He left no note, but his wife and employer knew what had happened. He had simply concluded his time had come, and he just lay down in the pastures he loved and allowed his soul to leave his body. He didn’t need end-of-life counseling. He knew intuitively that death is a perfectly natural end to the life cycle.

I would hope to have the courage and the faith in God to face my death with that kind of magnanimity.  We can only forestall death for a season. It will come to all of us—unless Christ’s return precedes it. Until that time comes, I’m going to try to live life in the most politically incorrect way possible.

Does a person's lifestyle have a bearing on how much the taxpayer is forced to spend on keeping him alive and somewhat well? In other words, if he smokes two or three packages of cigarettes a day, does that lessen the taxpayer's responsibility? How about the alcoholic whose drinking results in cirrhosis of the liver? The homosexual whose promiscuity leads to his contracting aids? Do you feel responsible for their medical treatment? You see, it is easy to sympathize with those like Jimmy Kimmel' baby. Through no fault of its own, it is born with a severe defect. Do we absolutely disregard careless, even reckless behavior's role in contributing to or causing that now-uninsurable condition for which all taxpayers are to shoulder the cost?

We can do what many other nations have done: We can provide what may be good but is also necessarily rationed health care to our citizens. That route will inevitably lead to less research and development, a disincentive to try new methods of treatment, a loss of patient-doctor relations and a much poorer product. President Obama Didn’t Know – Really? (Part II)

by Mark A. Cohen

Please ‘like’ From the Left to the Right’s Facebook Page.

I suggest some patterns I noticed of late, in this post, and in the previous post, Part I.

6. Gen. Petraeus scandal: President Obama implied to Chuck Todd (NBC News) of the David Petraeus / Paula Broadwell affair/scandal that his administration had “not been told,” coincidentally, until two days after the 2012 election! Who knew? Not the president.

I had no idea...
I had no idea...

7. Benghazi Scandal 1: Four Americans died in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11, 2012 (the anniversary of 9/11), after Ambassador Stevens requested help from the U.S. The Obama Administration didn’t increase security for the diplomatic mission ahead of time, even though the Muslim Brotherhood was on the rise there. All the president’s men and women blamed the attack on an outrageous video. They apparently don’t know a terrorist attack when they see one – or did they cover it up? No one at the White House still appears eager to investigate. “What difference, at this point, does it make?” said his Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, when she testified before Congress. Hmmm.

Despite President Obama’s claim that he won’t rest until we find out what happened, his administration seemed to say, ’Who cares?’
Despite President Obama’s claim that he won’t rest until we find out what happened, his administration seemed to say, ’Who cares?’

8. Benghazi Scandal 2: President Obama campaigned on the slogans, “Bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive,” and “Al Qaeda is on the run.” So, the Obama Administration sent U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice on the Sunday TV news shows less than 2 weeks before the 2012 presidential election. One must question their motivation. Why did President Obama send Ms. Rice out there? After campaigning on “Mission Accomplished” for squelching Al Qaeda and terrorism, the administration had to sell the fact that the mission in Benghazi was attacked due to Libyan reaction to an offensive video. They needed to deny the terrorism. Later, the president said that Susan Rice had nothing to do with Benghazi. So, using my left-wing teaching to question everything and speak truth to power, I must then ask, “Why did President Obama put her out there in the first place?”

Why did Susan Rice repeat the same, incorrect story on all 5 shows?
Why did Susan Rice repeat the same, incorrect story on all 5 shows?

With Secretary of State Hillary Clinton along side, the president said over a year ago, “make no mistake, we will work with the Libyan government to bring to justice the killers who attacked our people.” To date, no one has been prosecuted, arrested, or even accused. If you say that these things take time, then give President Bush the same courtesy, since those pesky WMD’s, hidden by Saddam Hussein, can still turn up. (These things, too, take time, right?) By the way, Susan Rice turned out to be wrong, but was rewarded by the president anyway, when he appointed her to National Security Advisor during his second term.

Yes, why?
Yes, why?

9. Obamacare failure 2: Millions of us already lost our doctors and our health care policies, even if we liked them. Costs are increasing for people in most states. Yet, President Obama claimed (many times, repeatedly), that his law will save the average family of four thousands of dollars. He said, “If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. PERIOD.” And, “If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan. PERIOD.” No disclaimer. …To be clear, when you say, “period,” you mean what you said is final, the truth, intractable. The president apparently didn’t know that people would be forced to give up their perfectly good and well-liked policies in favor of much more expensive ones. How did he not know? This is his signature law!

Even CNN knows.
Even CNN knows.

10. Surveillance: Showing anger over President Bush’s surveillance policies, Sen. Barack Obama sarcastically accused the former president of spying on American citizens. To the dismay of the left, the Obama Administration collects many more times the data than the Bush Administration, and is building a mammoth facility in Utah to store even more. Everything will be collected, except phone records, which were recently declared illegal by a judge. (I am not against collecting data, BTW, if it is not used in nefarious ways, but how we prevent it is debatable.) Does President Obama know anything about this? Well, if not, I’m sure he’ll find out about it one day while watching TV.

President Obama’s Utah Data Center - I’ll bet you could store some data there!
President Obama’s Utah Data Center - I’ll bet you could store some data there!

President Obama says he takes full responsibility for everything, and will get to the bottom of all the scandals, but he never does anything about them. No conclusion is ever reached, one ever gets fired, nobody is ever held accountable, and our president never seems to know much of what’s going on around him. He delegates most of the work, but, boy, as the left complained about President Bush, he sure plays a lot of golf!

President Obama Didn’t Know – Really? (Part I)

by Mark A. Cohen

Please ‘like’ From the Left to the Right’s Facebook Page

I give any president the privilege to perform diplomacy with foreign leaders (fib a little), and obfuscate (hide things in the name of national security), but President Obama appears to delegate - and then walks away, disengaged. Many of his supporters are angry that he has not done more. I maintain we’d be in a lot more trouble if he could manage effectively. He’s a great orator, yes. But like my father, who purposefully had no conservative friends, he doesn’t possess the skills to coerce, cajole, convince, or socialize with Republicans. President Obama stays in the dark, and it seems he likes it that way. During this administration, he (the most powerful man in the world) and his staff told us many times that he learns about current affairs not by being briefed by officials, but while watching TV. Even for the most ardent supporter, this must be hard to believe. (Even the Washingon Post is getting suspicious!) They have a set of photos outlining some of what he said he didn’t know.

 Hey, we won.
Hey, we won.

1. Obamacare failure 1: The president stood by the wayside from beginning to end while his signature Obamacare health-care law crashed and burned. Leaving it to Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Harry Reid to architect and twist arms for the “we won’t know what’s in it until we pass it” bill, he played golf, campaigned, and hob-knobbed with the rich and famous. No one informed President Obama of healthcare.gov’s problems until after its launch on Oct. 1, 2013, or so they claimed. He described the ease of use of healthcare.gov as being like buying “a plane ticket on Kayak,” or the “same way you shop for a TV on Amazon.” But the site crashed for weeks, instead. He appeared shocked that the government, for three years, had spent half a billion dollars on a website which didn’t work. I was surprised, too, but I am not in charge – he is.

Only 365,000 signed up so far, but how many have enrolled? Fewer, obviously.
Only 365,000 signed up so far, but how many have enrolled? Fewer, obviously.

2. Spying on our friends: When Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany feigned outrage over the fact that the U.S. was spying on her by tapping her cell phone (for the previous five years), the White House said President Obama had no idea this was happening. I support this tactic, and it is a bi-partisan one, by the way. I fully expect our allies to spy on us and any current administration to do the same, but how did the president not know? He needed to perform a delicate tap dance on this, and he did, but it fits the pattern.

Your country spied on me. No, I had no idea…
Your country spied on me. No, I had no idea…

3. IRS Scandal: The IRS spied on Tea Party group activities (‘spying’ isn’t right, but there’s nothing wrong with being aware of your opponents). They also discriminated against Tea Party groups by not allowing a majority of those to receive their applied-for 501c4’s (plenty wrong with that, in fact, that’s illegal). President Obama was either kept from this knowledge, or knew and denied it. He claimed that he first learned about this IRS tactic, “on Friday, when I was watching the news.” He then appeared outraged. “If in fact IRS personnel engaged in the kind of practices that have been reported on and were intentionally targeting conservative groups, then that’s outrageous. And there’s no place for it,” the president said. A year later he dismissed the IRS scandal as false outrage. Which is it?

I did nothing wrong. It was just a couple of rogue agents in Cincinnati…
I did nothing wrong. It was just a couple of rogue agents in Cincinnati…

4. Spying on the Media: The White House insisted it knew nothing of the fact that the Justice Department seized Associated Press reporters’ phone records, including those of James Rosen, of FOX News. Either the Obama administration has a private and consistent policy of meanness / underhandedness toward the opposition, or President Obama can’t control his own people. One of the two must be true, but which?

’A press that is free to investigate and criticize the government is absolutely essential in a nation that practices self-government…’ Thomas Jefferson.
’A press that is free to investigate and criticize the government is absolutely essential in a nation that practices self-government…’ Thomas Jefferson.

5. Fast and Furious: The Justice Department’s famous “Fast and Furious” scandal (Eric Holder’s people ran guns to Mexico and didn’t track them) was unknown to the Obama Administration. “…the president did not know about this tactic until he heard about it through the media,” his spokesman, Jay Carney said. An Alternative Thanksgiving Meal Discussion

My son is currently learning about the American Revolution in school (High School). In light of this revelation, I decided to strike up a conversation regarding Benedict Arnold, a notable major player in the revolution.

Arnold was a traitor, according to my son. Nothing more nothing less!

Thomas Paine, Patrick Henry, Horatio Gates? - - Never heard of them.

Paul Revere? Of course I know who he is Dad…”the British are coming!”

And, George Washington crossed the Delaware!

Of course I’m paraphrasing, but you get the gist. What are our children being taught in school?

They’re taught that the war occurred, but know nothing of the players or the hardships that took place leading up to and during the conflict...

The Nuclear Option

Harry Reid and the Democrat-controlled Senate adopted the so-called “Nuclear Option” on November 21, 2013.  That’s a date America will have cause to remember in years to come.   It will work to the advantage of the Progressives in the near run.  They will be able to obtain a quick approval of all the ultra-liberal justices that have been nominated for Federal courts by President Obama.  It will be only a formality to bring those nominees before the Senate for confirmation hearings.  No Democrat Senator has yet had the courage to vote against Harry Reid without the Leader's explicit permission—that would be to vote against something that is a shoo-in so that they can tell their constituents, “I voted against gun control”. This is specifically permitted by Reid so that Progressives can hang onto the seat that might otherwise be threatened.

No, in this instance, why not just bring in a list of the names of nominees for a quick vote of approval?  Maybe the 50 Progressives and so-called “Independents” (who hold quorum with the Progressives; indeed, one “Independent” is an avowed Socialist) can just give Harry a proxy to vote for them.  That would shorten the confirmation hearings to a few minutes for the whole group.  Read the names, have Harry Reid say, “I and the other 50 members whose votes I am authorized to cast approve the nominations of these 120 judges.”  As was the case in the drafting of the ACA, Republicans need not attend, because you will not be allowed to have an input.

As always, there is method behind Reid’s madness.  Or Obama’s genius—whoever came up with this idea.  You see, some challenges to the (Un) Affordable Care Act will be brought before the second-most powerful court in the United States—The Appellate Court of the District of Columbia.  It is imperative that the three extremely liberal justices Obama has selected to fill openings on that court be confirmed soon, so that they can hear appeals of the various supposed illegalities of Obamacare and rule in Obama’s favor BEFORE elections next November, when (hopefully) conservatives can perhaps regain control of the House and Senate.

Why is employment of the “Nuclear Option” such a departure from the way things have been done since the adoption of the Constitution?  To understand that, we need to be informed as to the rationale behind determining how members of the two houses of the legislature would be selected:

Article I, section 3, of the Constitution states:

The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each state, chosen by the legislature thereof for six Years; and each Senator shall have one Vote.

The framers believed that having state legislatures elect senators would strengthen the states' ties to the national government and increase the chances for ratification of the Constitution. They hoped that this arrangement would give state political leaders a sense of participation, calming their fears about a strong central government. They also wanted to provide a filter between the Senate and the passions and pressures of the populace. As the authors of the Federalist Papers explained, election by the state legislatures "is recommended by the double advantage of favoring a select appointment, and of giving to the State governments such an agency in the formation of the federal government as must secure the authority of the former, and may form a convenient link between the two systems" (Federalist No. 62). (Beautiful language—would that our education system made it possible for us to be able to fully comprehend it!)

Question: What is the Great Compromise?

Answer: Two plans were put forth during the Constitutional Convention to create the new branches of government. The Virginia Plan wanted a strong national government with three branches. The legislature would have two houses. One would be directly elected by the people and the second would selected by the first house from people nominated by the state legislatures. Further, the president and national judiciary would be chosen by the national legislature. On the other hand, the New Jersey Plan wanted a more decentralized plan amending the old Articles yet allowing for a somewhat stronger government. Each state would have one vote in Congress.

The Great Compromise combined these two plans creating our current legislature with two houses, one based on population and elected by the people and the other house allowing two senators per state being appointed by state legislatures.

Why did the framers of the constitution set up the Senate that way?  The smaller states were afraid of being run over by the more populous.  Virginia was by far the bigger with a population of almost 750,000.  Several states had fewer than 100,000 citizens.  By allowing each state only two senators, regardless of the population, and giving that body responsibility for confirming Presidential appointments, a balance was achieved to protect minority rights

Because of abuses by some states of the rules regarding interim appointments of Senators, etc., the 17th Amendment in 1912 changed the method of choosing Senators from selection by State legislatures to popular election—just like the House.  This change, widely hailed by many when instituted, has the effect of making those Senators more beholden to the Senate Majority (or Minority, for that matter) Leader than to the state that he ostensibly represents.  That leader can be more instrumental in effecting his re-election than close ties to the electorate of his state.

Good move for the states?  What do you think NOW?

Certainly, the Democrats employing the nuclear option makes future elections a great deal more important to each party.

Thank You Mr. Boehner!

Boehner_RINO
I guess it was about 10:00 PM when it was announced that Terry McAuliffe defeated Ken Cuccinelli to become the next Governor of the state of Virginia.

Almost immediately thereafter, the media pundits (you know the ones I mean) opined the loss as a “huge setback for the Tea Party Movement,” adding that “Virginia has been trending blue for some time now.”

Curious statements considering McAuliffe garnered less than 50% of the vote.

In fact, one could argue Cuccinelli would likely had won if not for presence of a third party candidate - - an argument you’ll hear from many conservative pundits today in the aftermath of the election.

And, an argument that’s probably true. But, let’s be clear, Ken Cuccinelli didn’t lose the race because Ross Perot…err…Robert Sarvis was in the race.

Ken Cuccinelli lost the race due to the actions of John Boehner, and his cronies, by their recent shutdown of the Federal Government...

Helping Those Who Don’t Want Your Kind Of Help

President Obama has convinced the media (Boy, was that difficult!) and most of the rest of his constituency that Obamacare is the greatest thing for the poor since sliced bread.  Is he—and the poor, plus the media—in for a surprise!

Because of the generosity of American taxpayers; not President Obama, not a Progressive Senate, not Progressives in any capacity, the poor have health insurance.  No longer are they second class citizens—like seniors on Medicare—they are now full-fledged participants in a health insurance that includes all the bells and whistles that nobody in his right mind would pay for out of his own pocket; things of which they have seldom heard, let alone used.

But all this did not come without problems.  You see, if you are poor and uninsured now and you or your child gets sick, all you have to do is go to the Emergency Room of a nearby hospital.  There, they must treat you or your child, even if you have no money to pay for that treatment.  Some who utilize this option complain about having to wait so long in the E R, but the fear of being reported to DHS drives doctors and nurses to treat indigent patients as quickly as possible.

Very soon, those indigents will have better insurance than I will ever again be able to afford.  Problem is, they will then be expected to call a doctor, get an appointment and perhaps wait a day or two to see the doctor--just like the rest of those insured.  Let me see a show of hands of those who believe that a majority of these newly insured are going to like and abide by the rules that the rest of us must play by.  Why should they?  They have always been able to go to the E R and see a doctor right now—today! Who cares if it is the most expensive way to administer health care (after all, E Rs are designed to treat emergencies!) that exists?  It still doesn’t cost the indigent a single penny.

The poor are going to receive the news that they now have insurance like the Montanan who got a phone call informing him that as a result of his entry in a contest, he was to be awarded a two-week, all-expense-paid vacation in North Dakota.  The phone was quiet for long moments, after which the Montanan asked, “Did I win or lose?”

You would probably have to have lived in one of those two states to appreciate the friendly rivalry between them.

Obamacare – It Covers Everyone: So, What’s Wrong With it? (I’ll Tell You) – Part II

by Mark A. Cohen

Please ‘like’ From the Left to the Right’s Facebook Page

Continued from last week’s post.

For those who didn’t read last week’s post, I began by saying that one of my friends honestly asked what was so bad about Obamacare. After all, no pre-existing conditions will be denied and everyone will be ensured. What a wonderful deal, right? I expressed my beliefs about why the bill hurts Americans now and why it will fail when implemented, but he objected to most of my statements, and demanded proof and accurate statistical analysis. I told him that neither of us could prove an opinion, but he seemed insistent. He postulated that Obamacare is way better than nothing (the system we have). I admitted that I didn’t like the current health care system either, but not all somethings are better than all nothings. The Democrats certainly didn’t like President Bush’s something (Social Security Savings Account - for only the very young), over nothing. Here’s a few more things that I don’t like about the Obamacare tax… (Remember, these are my opinions, and I do not have to prove any of them to anyone):

Most web sites in development for three years don’t have this much trouble.
Most web sites in development for three years don’t have this much trouble.

13. As predicted, the tax is not ready for implementation. Delays are the rule, rather than the exception. The websites, federal and state, crashed on day one, on live TV. Two weeks later millions still could not purchase insurance, and few had. (Daily Kos, a left-wing site, and The Daily Mail - in England - both reported approx. 55,000 in the first week, which would be, if accurate, about 5.5 million short of the 7 million goal set by the Obama administration by Mar. 30, 2014.) It’s interesting to note that my friend wildly pronounced on day one that the sites crashed because the high demand caused millions to try to get insurance immediately. It turns out that I was right and that the site was architected incorrectly. Instead of being able to see prices on page 1, each user must create an account first. This is opposite of the way things are usually done, and discourages enrollment (unless they are scared of chasing the users away). The site crashed because it was not ready for users. Many TV shows had reporters try to create an account (even on MSNBC), and couldn’t. Two weeks later we are still there. Demand is low and prices high. As usual, the federal government doesn’t know how to do business.

In addition, the Obamacare websites won’t protect you against cyber security attacks (it’s not safe to place your sensitive, personal information on the websites). The most transparent administration in history would not release figures on how many purchased insurance in the first (or second) week. If the numbers had been good, you can bet the administration would have touted the figures, front and center! In that case, the mainstream media also would have carried Obamacare’s water, highlighting its popularity.

14. Some on the left argue that all insurance will be sold by insurance companies, so, despite the bill’s immense number of rules and regulations, they maintain that there’s no governmental control whatsoever. If the federal government rules over the insurance industry, as Obamacare will, its public plan will squeeze the insurance companies out of business. That’s the goal here, socialized medicine and centralized control, and that’s socialism, folks! Remember, every country that ever tried to implement socialism has failed. That system doesn’t work. There's no need to test it anymore, we know that system of governing doesn’t work.

Repeal. Replace. Defund.
Repeal. Replace. Defund.

15. The bill, at more than 2,000 pages at creation time, and over 20,000 pages now, was so immense that no one could read it prior to passage. The Senate rushed it through over a weekend as I recall, giving no staff a chance to digest it. I don’t trust Congress anyway, but when a prime proponent of Obamacare said that ‘you have to pass it to see what’s in it,’ that left a bad taste. They passed it, to paraphrase Secretary John Kerry, “in the dead of night,” without giving anyone a chance to read it! How can anyone respect those tactics?

16. Obamacare skips over the fact that older folks generally have higher costs than the young. The unfair burden will be laid upon the youth of America, they would be overcharged for insurance, because they don’t usually get deathly ill. However, many of them will choose the penalty, so that logic pretty much goes out the window. “Fair for everyone” sure is complicated! Isn’t that right, folks on the left?

We never want to repeal or amend any law, including the Bush tax cuts – oh, wait...!
We never want to repeal or amend any law, including the Bush tax cuts – oh, wait...!

17. Several businesses have gone from full to part-time employees to avoid the additional cost of offering insurance to them. Some adjusted to the rule that those under 50 employees will get a break from the tax. They fired employees, or won’t hire some in order to remain compliant. I thought people on the left were for forcing companies to hire – not for forcing them to fire!

18. This is important, painful, and difficult for many on the left to grasp: The ability to purchase health care insurance (having a health care plan) is NOT the same as receiving health care. When those who are covered eventually go to a specialist or end up in the emergency room, they’ll dislike their high out-of-pocket costs. (This will feel the same as not having insurance at all.) Thanks a lot, Obamacare!

Take two and call me in 2019.
Take two and call me in 2019.

19. This year, for the first time ever (15 years) my wife will not be able to stay on the insurance I purchase at my current company (29 if we take into account my previous employer). President Obama promised we would be able to keep our insurance if we liked it... but that turned out to be a false promise. Now, for the first time, the only insurance available to us are two policies, both with very high deductibles. (This means our out-of-pocket expenses for all of our future health care will increase.) We don't like that lack of choice. Democrats always say they are always for choice, but not in this case. Some would argue that my employer’s plan is not Obamacare, and technically they may be right, but I say that Obamacare affected my company’s decision-making process about health insurance. It’s not working out for us so far. (Sad face.)

Very funny.
Very funny.

20. Government, like large corporations, never does anything right – due to massive restrictions and regulations. Their sheer size cripples them. Just look at the Post Office… and the IRS. We always find governing failures in the large, extremist (fascist, socialist, and Communist) countries. Their systems never work out for their people in the long run because forcing equality upon a populous always means making everyone equally poor. (People on the left point to Scandinavian countries as the models of socialism, but they are much less populous than America and they enjoy many more economic freedoms than we do.)

21. It’s especially painful when friends say that I don’t care about the poor, that I like being denied for pre-existing conditions, that I love the insurance companies. None of that is true. I simply disagree with them that Obamacare fixes the health care system. As more companies gear up for next year’s insurance offerings, more people will become dissatisfied with this expensive, inefficient, and highly unaffordable governmental intrusion into our lives. Can I prove it? No. Can they prove that Obamacare is the best way to handle health care? No, they can’t.

When it comes to abortions, Democrats say, ‘leave my body alone!’ For Obamacare, though, it’s quite all right.
When it comes to abortions, Democrats say, ‘leave my body alone!’ For Obamacare, though, it’s quite all right.

22. The left likes to say that America had one of the worst health care systems in the world prior to Obamacare. I saw reports from 2011-12, placing the formula for the doctor to patients ratio in America at approx. 370-416 patients to 1 doctor. (True disclosure: I heard from 508 to 2,000 to 1 doctor in late 2013, but I can’t verify those claims.) In developing countries the ratio is about 250,000-300,000 people for each doctor. Yes, this is Google-able, for all you proof-seekers. So we had one of the better systems. (They will argue that it’s silly comparing America to Malawi, for example, and they’ll say they never said anything about third world countries. I agree, they shouldn’t have brought it up in the first place...)

23. From the previous argument: Over half of the doctors we have in this country are over 50, and will retire. If healthcare providers turn away those who purchase insurance in the exchanges, this could make the system even more painful. If health care is distributed to millions more with fewer doctors, what happens to the care we enjoyed prior to Obamacare? I thought so.

 Most oppose Obamacare.
Most oppose Obamacare.

My friend asked what’s so bad about Obamacare, and what harm could it possibly do? I have done my best to answer, but I’ll bet he’ll continue to defend this offensive and painful tax. Many on the left will claim it's doing great, even when it's not. If it ever does poorly, and hurts people, guess who they'll blame? Who bears the brunt of Obamacare not working? My crystal ball says that in their eyes: The blame shall never fall upon former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Sen. Harry Reid, or President Obama, but, of course... the Republicans!
