President Obama Didn’t Know – Really? (Part II)

by Mark A. Cohen

Please ‘like’ From the Left to the Right’s Facebook Page.

I suggest some patterns I noticed of late, in this post, and in the previous post, Part I.

6. Gen. Petraeus scandal: President Obama implied to Chuck Todd (NBC News) of the David Petraeus / Paula Broadwell affair/scandal that his administration had “not been told,” coincidentally, until two days after the 2012 election! Who knew? Not the president.

I had no idea...
I had no idea...

7. Benghazi Scandal 1: Four Americans died in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11, 2012 (the anniversary of 9/11), after Ambassador Stevens requested help from the U.S. The Obama Administration didn’t increase security for the diplomatic mission ahead of time, even though the Muslim Brotherhood was on the rise there. All the president’s men and women blamed the attack on an outrageous video. They apparently don’t know a terrorist attack when they see one – or did they cover it up? No one at the White House still appears eager to investigate. “What difference, at this point, does it make?” said his Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, when she testified before Congress. Hmmm.

Despite President Obama’s claim that he won’t rest until we find out what happened, his administration seemed to say, ’Who cares?’
Despite President Obama’s claim that he won’t rest until we find out what happened, his administration seemed to say, ’Who cares?’

8. Benghazi Scandal 2: President Obama campaigned on the slogans, “Bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive,” and “Al Qaeda is on the run.” So, the Obama Administration sent U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice on the Sunday TV news shows less than 2 weeks before the 2012 presidential election. One must question their motivation. Why did President Obama send Ms. Rice out there? After campaigning on “Mission Accomplished” for squelching Al Qaeda and terrorism, the administration had to sell the fact that the mission in Benghazi was attacked due to Libyan reaction to an offensive video. They needed to deny the terrorism. Later, the president said that Susan Rice had nothing to do with Benghazi. So, using my left-wing teaching to question everything and speak truth to power, I must then ask, “Why did President Obama put her out there in the first place?”

Why did Susan Rice repeat the same, incorrect story on all 5 shows?
Why did Susan Rice repeat the same, incorrect story on all 5 shows?

With Secretary of State Hillary Clinton along side, the president said over a year ago, “make no mistake, we will work with the Libyan government to bring to justice the killers who attacked our people.” To date, no one has been prosecuted, arrested, or even accused. If you say that these things take time, then give President Bush the same courtesy, since those pesky WMD’s, hidden by Saddam Hussein, can still turn up. (These things, too, take time, right?) By the way, Susan Rice turned out to be wrong, but was rewarded by the president anyway, when he appointed her to National Security Advisor during his second term.

Yes, why?
Yes, why?

9. Obamacare failure 2: Millions of us already lost our doctors and our health care policies, even if we liked them. Costs are increasing for people in most states. Yet, President Obama claimed (many times, repeatedly), that his law will save the average family of four thousands of dollars. He said, “If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. PERIOD.” And, “If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan. PERIOD.” No disclaimer. …To be clear, when you say, “period,” you mean what you said is final, the truth, intractable. The president apparently didn’t know that people would be forced to give up their perfectly good and well-liked policies in favor of much more expensive ones. How did he not know? This is his signature law!

Even CNN knows.
Even CNN knows.

10. Surveillance: Showing anger over President Bush’s surveillance policies, Sen. Barack Obama sarcastically accused the former president of spying on American citizens. To the dismay of the left, the Obama Administration collects many more times the data than the Bush Administration, and is building a mammoth facility in Utah to store even more. Everything will be collected, except phone records, which were recently declared illegal by a judge. (I am not against collecting data, BTW, if it is not used in nefarious ways, but how we prevent it is debatable.) Does President Obama know anything about this? Well, if not, I’m sure he’ll find out about it one day while watching TV.

President Obama’s Utah Data Center - I’ll bet you could store some data there!
President Obama’s Utah Data Center - I’ll bet you could store some data there!

President Obama says he takes full responsibility for everything, and will get to the bottom of all the scandals, but he never does anything about them. No conclusion is ever reached, one ever gets fired, nobody is ever held accountable, and our president never seems to know much of what’s going on around him. He delegates most of the work, but, boy, as the left complained about President Bush, he sure plays a lot of golf!

President Obama Didn’t Know – Really? (Part I)

by Mark A. Cohen

Please ‘like’ From the Left to the Right’s Facebook Page

I give any president the privilege to perform diplomacy with foreign leaders (fib a little), and obfuscate (hide things in the name of national security), but President Obama appears to delegate - and then walks away, disengaged. Many of his supporters are angry that he has not done more. I maintain we’d be in a lot more trouble if he could manage effectively. He’s a great orator, yes. But like my father, who purposefully had no conservative friends, he doesn’t possess the skills to coerce, cajole, convince, or socialize with Republicans. President Obama stays in the dark, and it seems he likes it that way. During this administration, he (the most powerful man in the world) and his staff told us many times that he learns about current affairs not by being briefed by officials, but while watching TV. Even for the most ardent supporter, this must be hard to believe. (Even the Washingon Post is getting suspicious!) They have a set of photos outlining some of what he said he didn’t know.

 Hey, we won.
Hey, we won.

1. Obamacare failure 1: The president stood by the wayside from beginning to end while his signature Obamacare health-care law crashed and burned. Leaving it to Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Harry Reid to architect and twist arms for the “we won’t know what’s in it until we pass it” bill, he played golf, campaigned, and hob-knobbed with the rich and famous. No one informed President Obama of healthcare.gov’s problems until after its launch on Oct. 1, 2013, or so they claimed. He described the ease of use of healthcare.gov as being like buying “a plane ticket on Kayak,” or the “same way you shop for a TV on Amazon.” But the site crashed for weeks, instead. He appeared shocked that the government, for three years, had spent half a billion dollars on a website which didn’t work. I was surprised, too, but I am not in charge – he is.

Only 365,000 signed up so far, but how many have enrolled? Fewer, obviously.
Only 365,000 signed up so far, but how many have enrolled? Fewer, obviously.

2. Spying on our friends: When Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany feigned outrage over the fact that the U.S. was spying on her by tapping her cell phone (for the previous five years), the White House said President Obama had no idea this was happening. I support this tactic, and it is a bi-partisan one, by the way. I fully expect our allies to spy on us and any current administration to do the same, but how did the president not know? He needed to perform a delicate tap dance on this, and he did, but it fits the pattern.

Your country spied on me. No, I had no idea…
Your country spied on me. No, I had no idea…

3. IRS Scandal: The IRS spied on Tea Party group activities (‘spying’ isn’t right, but there’s nothing wrong with being aware of your opponents). They also discriminated against Tea Party groups by not allowing a majority of those to receive their applied-for 501c4’s (plenty wrong with that, in fact, that’s illegal). President Obama was either kept from this knowledge, or knew and denied it. He claimed that he first learned about this IRS tactic, “on Friday, when I was watching the news.” He then appeared outraged. “If in fact IRS personnel engaged in the kind of practices that have been reported on and were intentionally targeting conservative groups, then that’s outrageous. And there’s no place for it,” the president said. A year later he dismissed the IRS scandal as false outrage. Which is it?

I did nothing wrong. It was just a couple of rogue agents in Cincinnati…
I did nothing wrong. It was just a couple of rogue agents in Cincinnati…

4. Spying on the Media: The White House insisted it knew nothing of the fact that the Justice Department seized Associated Press reporters’ phone records, including those of James Rosen, of FOX News. Either the Obama administration has a private and consistent policy of meanness / underhandedness toward the opposition, or President Obama can’t control his own people. One of the two must be true, but which?

’A press that is free to investigate and criticize the government is absolutely essential in a nation that practices self-government…’ Thomas Jefferson.
’A press that is free to investigate and criticize the government is absolutely essential in a nation that practices self-government…’ Thomas Jefferson.

5. Fast and Furious: The Justice Department’s famous “Fast and Furious” scandal (Eric Holder’s people ran guns to Mexico and didn’t track them) was unknown to the Obama Administration. “…the president did not know about this tactic until he heard about it through the media,” his spokesman, Jay Carney said. Sure, Jay. Sure, Jay. I'm beginning to see a pattern...

Many Hispanics and at least one American died, but President Obama and AG Eric Holder didn’t know this was their own policy. Kind of hard to believe.

Obamacare – It Covers Everyone: So, What’s Wrong With it? (I’ll Tell You) – Part II

by Mark A. Cohen

Please ‘like’ From the Left to the Right’s Facebook Page

Continued from last week’s post.

For those who didn’t read last week’s post, I began by saying that one of my friends honestly asked what was so bad about Obamacare. After all, no pre-existing conditions will be denied and everyone will be ensured. What a wonderful deal, right? I expressed my beliefs about why the bill hurts Americans now and why it will fail when implemented, but he objected to most of my statements, and demanded proof and accurate statistical analysis. I told him that neither of us could prove an opinion, but he seemed insistent. He postulated that Obamacare is way better than nothing (the system we have). I admitted that I didn’t like the current health care system either, but not all somethings are better than all nothings. The Democrats certainly didn’t like President Bush’s something (Social Security Savings Account - for only the very young), over nothing. Here’s a few more things that I don’t like about the Obamacare tax… (Remember, these are my opinions, and I do not have to prove any of them to anyone):

Most web sites in development for three years don’t have this much trouble.
Most web sites in development for three years don’t have this much trouble.

13. As predicted, the tax is not ready for implementation. Delays are the rule, rather than the exception. The websites, federal and state, crashed on day one, on live TV. Two weeks later millions still could not purchase insurance, and few had. (Daily Kos, a left-wing site, and The Daily Mail - in England - both reported approx. 55,000 in the first week, which would be, if accurate, about 5.5 million short of the 7 million goal set by the Obama administration by Mar. 30, 2014.) It’s interesting to note that my friend wildly pronounced on day one that the sites crashed because the high demand caused millions to try to get insurance immediately. It turns out that I was right and that the site was architected incorrectly. Instead of being able to see prices on page 1, each user must create an account first. This is opposite of the way things are usually done, and discourages enrollment (unless they are scared of chasing the users away). The site crashed because it was not ready for users. Many TV shows had reporters try to create an account (even on MSNBC), and couldn’t. Two weeks later we are still there. Demand is low and prices high. As usual, the federal government doesn’t know how to do business.

In addition, the Obamacare websites won’t protect you against cyber security attacks (it’s not safe to place your sensitive, personal information on the websites). The most transparent administration in history would not release figures on how many purchased insurance in the first (or second) week. If the numbers had been good, you can bet the administration would have touted the figures, front and center! In that case, the mainstream media also would have carried Obamacare’s water, highlighting its popularity.

14. Some on the left argue that all insurance will be sold by insurance companies, so, despite the bill’s immense number of rules and regulations, they maintain that there’s no governmental control whatsoever. If the federal government rules over the insurance industry, as Obamacare will, its public plan will squeeze the insurance companies out of business. That’s the goal here, socialized medicine and centralized control, and that’s socialism, folks! Remember, every country that ever tried to implement socialism has failed. That system doesn’t work. There's no need to test it anymore, we know that system of governing doesn’t work.

Repeal. Replace. Defund.
Repeal. Replace. Defund.

15. The bill, at more than 2,000 pages at creation time, and over 20,000 pages now, was so immense that no one could read it prior to passage. The Senate rushed it through over a weekend as I recall, giving no staff a chance to digest it. I don’t trust Congress anyway, but when a prime proponent of Obamacare said that ‘you have to pass it to see what’s in it,’ that left a bad taste. They passed it, to paraphrase Secretary John Kerry, “in the dead of night,” without giving anyone a chance to read it! How can anyone respect those tactics?

16. Obamacare skips over the fact that older folks generally have higher costs than the young. The unfair burden will be laid upon the youth of America, they would be overcharged for insurance, because they don’t usually get deathly ill. However, many of them will choose the penalty, so that logic pretty much goes out the window. “Fair for everyone” sure is complicated! Isn’t that right, folks on the left?

We never want to repeal or amend any law, including the Bush tax cuts – oh, wait...!
We never want to repeal or amend any law, including the Bush tax cuts – oh, wait...!

17. Several businesses have gone from full to part-time employees to avoid the additional cost of offering insurance to them. Some adjusted to the rule that those under 50 employees will get a break from the tax. They fired employees, or won’t hire some in order to remain compliant. I thought people on the left were for forcing companies to hire – not for forcing them to fire!

18. This is important, painful, and difficult for many on the left to grasp: The ability to purchase health care insurance (having a health care plan) is NOT the same as receiving health care. When those who are covered eventually go to a specialist or end up in the emergency room, they’ll dislike their high out-of-pocket costs. (This will feel the same as not having insurance at all.) Thanks a lot, Obamacare!

Take two and call me in 2019.
Take two and call me in 2019.

19. This year, for the first time ever (15 years) my wife will not be able to stay on the insurance I purchase at my current company (29 if we take into account my previous employer). President Obama promised we would be able to keep our insurance if we liked it... but that turned out to be a false promise. Now, for the first time, the only insurance available to us are two policies, both with very high deductibles. (This means our out-of-pocket expenses for all of our future health care will increase.) We don't like that lack of choice. Democrats always say they are always for choice, but not in this case. Some would argue that my employer’s plan is not Obamacare, and technically they may be right, but I say that Obamacare affected my company’s decision-making process about health insurance. It’s not working out for us so far. (Sad face.)

Very funny.
Very funny.

20. Government, like large corporations, never does anything right – due to massive restrictions and regulations. Their sheer size cripples them. Just look at the Post Office… and the IRS. We always find governing failures in the large, extremist (fascist, socialist, and Communist) countries. Their systems never work out for their people in the long run because forcing equality upon a populous always means making everyone equally poor. (People on the left point to Scandinavian countries as the models of socialism, but they are much less populous than America and they enjoy many more economic freedoms than we do.)

21. It’s especially painful when friends say that I don’t care about the poor, that I like being denied for pre-existing conditions, that I love the insurance companies. None of that is true. I simply disagree with them that Obamacare fixes the health care system. As more companies gear up for next year’s insurance offerings, more people will become dissatisfied with this expensive, inefficient, and highly unaffordable governmental intrusion into our lives. Can I prove it? No. Can they prove that Obamacare is the best way to handle health care? No, they can’t.

When it comes to abortions, Democrats say, ‘leave my body alone!’ For Obamacare, though, it’s quite all right.
When it comes to abortions, Democrats say, ‘leave my body alone!’ For Obamacare, though, it’s quite all right.

22. The left likes to say that America had one of the worst health care systems in the world prior to Obamacare. I saw reports from 2011-12, placing the formula for the doctor to patients ratio in America at approx. 370-416 patients to 1 doctor. (True disclosure: I heard from 508 to 2,000 to 1 doctor in late 2013, but I can’t verify those claims.) In developing countries the ratio is about 250,000-300,000 people for each doctor. Yes, this is Google-able, for all you proof-seekers. So we had one of the better systems. (They will argue that it’s silly comparing America to Malawi, for example, and they’ll say they never said anything about third world countries. I agree, they shouldn’t have brought it up in the first place...)

23. From the previous argument: Over half of the doctors we have in this country are over 50, and will retire. If healthcare providers turn away those who purchase insurance in the exchanges, this could make the system even more painful. If health care is distributed to millions more with fewer doctors, what happens to the care we enjoyed prior to Obamacare? I thought so.

 Most oppose Obamacare.
Most oppose Obamacare.

My friend asked what’s so bad about Obamacare, and what harm could it possibly do? I have done my best to answer, but I’ll bet he’ll continue to defend this offensive and painful tax. Many on the left will claim it's doing great, even when it's not. If it ever does poorly, and hurts people, guess who they'll blame? Who bears the brunt of Obamacare not working? My crystal ball says that in their eyes: The blame shall never fall upon former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Sen. Harry Reid, or President Obama, but, of course... the Republicans!

Obamacare – It Covers Everyone: So, What’s Wrong With it? (I’ll Tell You) – Part I

by Mark A. Cohen

Please ‘like’ From the Left to the Right’s Facebook Page

Amazing.
Amazing.

One of my friends recently (and honestly) asked what was so bad about Obamacare. After all, everyone can be insured and no pre-existing conditions will be denied. Sounds great, right? I told him what I thought, but he didn’t like my answer, and said that all of my points could be refuted. I agreed, but so could his supportive arguments. My friend also said that hey, it’s better than nothing (the system we have). I admitted that I didn’t like the current system either, but not all somethings are better than all nothings. The Democrats certainly didn’t like President Bush’s something (Social Security Savings Account - for only the very young), over nothing. Here are the first dozen things I don’t like about the Obamacare tax:

1. Despite the claims of Democrats, Republicans were NOT consulted on crafting the Obamacare bill. I actually remember what happened. The law was written by only Democrats, so it’s one-sided. No Republican ideas were included, and that’s bad. (Romneycare was NOT a nationalized health plan and does NOT qualify as a Republican idea.) Democrats would never let us forget: Let’s say a Republican president took a controversial conservative idea from a single moderate Democrat governor. This president (Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Mia Love, Nikki Haley, or Bobby Jindal?) said you had to pass it to see what was in it, and implemented it nationally - after passing it with no votes from any Democrats. Would their party say our Republican president passed a Democratic idea? No.

Let’s craft a bill without the Republicans, and pass it all by our lonesome... okay!
Let’s craft a bill without the Republicans, and pass it all by our lonesome... okay!

2. The tax was passed by a bare 60 vote majority, after Sen. Arlen Specter switched parties from (R) to (D)… It was passed after many back-room deals, and several Senators were promised special deals to benefit their states. For those who say Obamacare is the ‘law of the land,’ please recall the “cornhusker kickback.” In exchange for his “yes” vote, Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) was promised that the federal government would fund Nebraska’s expanded Medicaid system, the only state to get permanent federal assistance – yes, forever, predicted to be about $45 million per decade. Every other state (all 49) would pay for this going forward. Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA), was promised an additional $300 million for her state’s Medicaid program if she voted for the bill. Nice, huh? Fair? The “law of the land?” Maybe, but unfairly passed – barely under the wire - for sure.

You can’t cover more people w/o increasing prices.
You can’t cover more people w/o increasing prices.

3. I don’t like the federal (or any) government telling me I have to purchase anything, including health insurance. They never forced us before, and what’s to stop them from telling me which car to purchase, or which company’s oil to buy? This is a freedom, and a slippery slope issue. It borders on tyranny when the authorities put a gun to our head (back atcha) and force us to spend our money. Hey, Dems, where’s that “screw them!” attitude, and just when we need it?< p>

4. Obamacare imposes a penalty on those who don’t buy insurance, and the penalty will stiffen as the years go on. That’s unfair, and back-breaking for the poor. I thought that only Democrats support the rights of the poor. Guess not.

5. If Obamacare were such a great law, why did President Obama delay the penalty for corporations, but not for individuals (we, the people)?

6. If Obamacare were such a great law, why are lawmakers and most public employees exempt, and why did thousands of the president’s buddies (CEO’s, and corporate donors) get exemptions? The left rails against such behavior when a Republican is the target, but supports such cronyism when it benefits the left’s agenda. Many on the left don’t seem to care if the little people can’t get exemptions if they want to opt out.

Star Trek II, Khan: You can't get away!
Star Trek II, Khan: You can't get away!

7. Obamacare doesn’t fix one of its main goals, to insure everyone. Millions (perhaps as many as now) will still be uninsured, even years after it takes effect.

8. Obamacare doesn’t fix one of its main goals, to lower the cost of health care. Some will enjoy its benefits, yes, but a majority will still pay for the others. You can’t get something for nothing. How can more be insured for less cost? That can’t happen. That’s not possible!

9. President Obama said, over and over again, “If you like your insurance, you can keep it.” While that statement stands for some, many (who received insurance through their employers) have already lost their insurance, and must now buy it on the exchanges. Millions will lose out.

I am one of those millions who lost coverage.
I am one of those millions who lost coverage.

10. Middle America will probably bear the burden of the cost of Obamacare. I’ll agree with liberals here: The rich (and businesses) never pay more, even when intimidated, forced, or threatened. As we suspect, they will pass the costs on to us. (The difference here is that I accept this as the way things are, but people on the other side don’t, they resist the nature of businesses every day.)

11. The IRS will enforce this tax. The HHS Secretary will have the final say (Hey, Democrats – that could be a Republican, several years from now!). Many more employees will be added to the IRS to collect the additional revenue. Yes, I like police, firemen, and teachers, but I don’t like when government grows (in this way) because it’s highly inefficient. Check out the Post Office, and the IRS (remember the IRS scandal?) for two examples. Bureaucracies, like many large corporations (right, Democrats?), don’t generally function well.

12. The increased number of patients will force IRS officials to decide who deserves treatment over others. Do you really want some guy in the IRS deciding over your son or daughter’s care? Just ask Sarah Murnaghan, the 11-year-old, who required a lung transplant to live. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius denied poor Sarah’s request several times, but under public pressure, finally caved in. Sad story, but this tax will hurt young people, too.

To be continued next week…

Jonathan Alter – Journalist, or Left-Wing Activist?

by Mark A. Cohen

Please ‘like’ From the Left to the Right’s Facebook Page

The MSM sees Mr. Alter as a journalistic genius.
The MSM sees Mr. Alter as a journalistic genius.

Jonathan Alter, a member of the mainstream media (MSM), is held in high regard by his peers and is known by some mild terms, like ‘columnist’ and ‘author.’ His latest book is called, “The Center Holds, Obama and His Enemies.” Naturally, the use of the word ‘enemies,’ implies that those evil Republicans are out to get the president. It can’t be that we disagree with Mr. Obama’s policies, oh, no. It’s not that the president won’t work with our guys, naah. Alter discussed the untouchable’s second term on CSPAN’s Washington Journal a month ago, on June 24, 2013. Many in the MSM, I recall, predicted doom and gloom for President Bush’s second term, but not here. Now it’s, “This president can only succeed if the Republicans would just go away – or change their minds.” On TV, Alter showed confidence in the president’s ability to recover from the multitude of scandals; he has plenty of time. Sure, when you have a favorable media, I suppose you can overcome adversity, especially if all the nagging problems are completely ignored.

The Center Holds, Alter’s New Book, has a rather paranoid subtitle.
The Center Holds, Alter’s New Book, has a rather paranoid subtitle.

Alter says that the IRS and NSA stories are not going to be permanent blemishes on President Obama’s record. Given the media’s bias, he may be right. Like many of his colleagues, he’s excited about the possibility that if immigration reform doesn’t pass the House, the Republicans won’t be able to get their candidate elected in 2016. He, like many on the left, perpetuates the myth that all of a sudden conservatives support immigration reform, when we have been proponents of change in this area all along. Conservatives want to secure the border first, and then address the issue, but no one in the MSM wants you to realize it. They prefer that you believe the lie instead, that people on the right hate everyone, including grandma, and love dirty air and poisoned water.

One of Alter’s Other Books - The Promise.
One of Alter’s Other Books - The Promise.

Jonathan Alter also says that the Obama campaign stealthily visited the Latino community many times (quietly, to avoid attention), in order to win the hearts and minds of those voters. According to Mr. Alter, the immigration bill is now a direct result of that outreach… If the Republicans had done the same, though, they’d have been accused of buying votes, but in this case, it’s a wonderful tactic. If you believe there’s fairness in the media, google a left-wing pundit like Mr. Alter and a conservative journalist, like Sean Hannity, and compare the wording.

Jonathan Alter, neither a reporter or a journalist, is a liberal pundit.
Jonathan Alter, neither a reporter or a journalist, is a liberal pundit.

Alter thinks he knows why the president is so silent. He said that President Obama learned that if he raised his profile too high, or come out in favor of something, the Republicans would immediately come out against it. Sort of like each time President Bush did the same, and the Democrats and the media came out against him. They called Bush ‘imperial’ for ‘hiding’ during his second term, but in this case it’s politically smart. Sure. I’ve seen that all presidents do this. There’s nothing smart or sinister about it, unless you push a political agenda.

Jonathan Alter spent 28 years at Newsweek, no wonder they love him.
Jonathan Alter spent 28 years at Newsweek, no wonder they love him.

It’s amazing how important the media moguls think President Obama’s legacy is, when they couldn’t wait for Bush to leave. While Mr. Alter says that his job is to hold politicians from both parties accountable, he only holds Republicans accountable. Democrats were not obstructionist during President Bush’s term, only Republicans are now, during President Obama’s. If Democrats had passed Bush’s Social Security reforms I’m sure Mr. Alter and the rest of the MSM would have had a fit, but if Republicans pass the Democrats’s immigration reform they are “stepping up.” This seems just a bit one-sided to me.

Alter’s an MSNBC kind of guy, not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Alter’s an MSNBC kind of guy, not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Mr. Alter is a liberal and a proponent of the president’s policies, but I don’t hold that against him. The media pretends that he’s a fair journalist, and that’s what I find reprehensible. He’s neither. To explain it to left-wingers, he sounds like a liberal Sean Hannity to me. I don’t say that my blog is journalism, but neither is Mr. Alter’s work. He’s as partisan as I am. He said that righties need to stop resisting Obamacare, no matter what we might think of it, and we need more investment in infrastructure. He’s right, some roads and bridges do need repair, but doesn’t that sound rather familiar?

Eric Holder’s Predicament

by Mark A. Cohen

Originally posted on May 30, 2013

I’m now active on Twitter. Please follow me there at @markacohen

 Freedom of the Press

If a government uses strong-arm tactics to silence opposing viewpoints, repression comes to mind. People must be allowed to voice their opinions. This is considered healthy and vital for freedom and democracy, and has been a hallmark of the “American way.” Recent generations have feared the overreach of bureaucrats, especially concerning wiretapped telephone conversations, the collection of private information, and spying on individuals.

Wiretapping

The media has been known as the fourth estate for a long time, meaning that it is a counter-balance to the three branches of government. When the media questions an administration and its officials and probes deeply, this stems the chance for tyranny, otherwise known as oppression of the people by its government. Even my father, a self-avowed Communist, hailed freedom of the press as a landmark of democracy. “Without a free press you have dictatorships,” he said. “Reporters must be free to obtain information and publish it.” When regimes harass the media, information can’t flow freely.

Eric Holder, testifying.
Eric Holder, testifying.

The Obama Administration’s Department of Justice (DOJ) suspected Associated Press (AP) reporters of leaking classified information, so it targeted the call logs of more than 20 AP phone lines. The DOJ, amidst suspicions that James Rosen, a FOX News reporter, blogging about classified information so the DOJ seized his phone records and e-mails. They appeared ready to charge Rosen as a “co-conspirator” for leaking such information, although Rosen may not have known its’ classification. Eric Holder, the U.S. Attorney General (AG), appeared before a Congressional hearing last week to answer related questions. He testified, using similar phrases, such as, “I did not know… I am not familiar…” He also said, “In regard to potential prosecution of the press for the disclosure of material... This is not something I’ve ever been involved in, heard of, or would think would be wise policy.” It turned out that Holder did sign the warrant ordering the seizure of Rosen’s e-mails. Hmmm.

 James Rosen, reporting.

The oddest thing about this scandal, no matter how you might feel about it, is that President Obama, instead of assigning an independent counsel to get to the bottom of it all, has assigned Eric Holder to investigate the matter. So we have Holder investigating… himself. How would that work, and does it make sense?

Holder Investigating himself.
Holder Investigating himself.

Here are my observations and opinions: Republicans in a pickle generally resign in embarrassment among a hailstorm of accusations and/or innuendo in the media (Bush’s AG, John Ashcroft, Sen. Trent Lott, Sen. Larry Craig). Democrats in the same situation usually don’t admit wrongdoing until there is an avalanche of proof (President Clinton, Sen. Menendez, Anthony Weiner, presidential candidate John Edwards). The mainstream media will support them by either ignoring the stories or covering them lightly until they can’t be ignored. (Are there exceptions? Yes, of course.) Most of us can’t predict the future with accuracy, but I think it will take a ton of evidence for Eric Holder to step down.
